It turns out that the big brain behind what a grieving couple called an “ambush” by the White House was none other than Donald Trump. Earlier today we reported on Charlotte Charles and Tim Dunn, a couple from the United Kingdom that has traveled to the United States in order to find some resolution in the death of their 19-year-old son Harry Dunn. Dunn was killed when his motorcycle was hit by a Volvo driving down the wrong side of the road in the U.K. The person driving the car was 42-year-old Anne Sacoolas, wife of a U.S. intelligence officer stationed abroad. After pleading diplomatic immunity in the case, Sacoolas fled the country and came back to the United States, refusing to return and speak with authorities.
Charles and Dunn were surprised on Tuesday when they received a call from the White House, asking them to visit. They were more surprised when they found Donald Trump himself waiting to meet with them. Their surprise gave way to shock and dismay when it became clear that Anne Sacoolas was somewhere nearby and Trump and his staff were trying to set up a photo-op reunion between the three. Charles and Dunn put the blame mostly on Trump’s national security adviser Robert O’Brien, saying, “It struck us that this meeting was hastily arranged by nincompoops on the run and in particular Mr O’Brien who appeared to be extremely uptight and aggressive and did not come across at all well in this meeting which required careful handling and sensitivity.”
The Washington Post is now reporting that while Charles seems to be correct that the meeting “was hastily arranged by nincompoops on the run,” it wasn’t necessarily O’Brien’s brainchild. No, the impulse to try and create a superficial reality show finale came from two-bit conman Donald Trump.
White House officials were skeptical of having Dunn’s parents and Sacoolas in the West Wing at the same time, but Trump was keen on having a “hug and make up moment,” according to a person with knowledge of the discussions.
Trump’s response to all of this was to explain that the roads in the UK are “opposite” to Americans.
"That happens in Europe, you go to Europe and the roads are opposite. It's very tough if you're from the United States," Trump said. "That happens to a lot of people, by the way."
The job of president includes a wide range of diplomacy. Our current white supremacist in chief has been a failure in this regard, on every level imaginable. We are at the beginning of an impeachment inquiry based on one such example of how incompetent and criminal his diplomatic skill set is.
