Some movies ought to have reviews here on Daily Kos. So here’s a list of movies coming out today. I try to say a little something about each movie, I say a lot more about some of the movies. Doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a good movie, might mean it should be reviewed here on Daily Kos.
If you write a review about one of these movies, please send a message to the Movie Review Group so we can reblog it. Also send us a message if you would like to write up next Friday's list of newly released movies.
The Captain — Do you remember hearing about the Airbus A319 accident last year? This movie’s about that. The trailer has subtitles in both Chinese and English.
Maybe they could have thought a little harder on the English title. Looks very interesting, though.
Cyrano, My Love — Limited release movie about Cyrano de Bergerac.
The Elephant Queen — Limited release nature documentary.
Greener Grass — Limited release surreal take on The Stepford Wives.
Jay and Silent Bob Reboot — I’m not exactly sure what’s up with this one. First, what is the release date? A few weeks ago, the information was all over the place about the release date. It would be one day only on three different days in October?
Also, since Kevin Smith can very clearly afford lawyers, can’t he also afford someone to manage his money so that he doesn’t have to keep going back to the Jay and Silent Bob well, so that he can find something else that interests him?
Okay, here’s the trailer:
So maybe Kevin Smith’s trying to go grassroots with this one.
As I’ve mentioned before, I’m still a little annoyed that, prompted by something he said in a comedy special, I sent Kevin Smith a DVD for his amusement, and his lawyers sent it back covered in “Return to Sender” stamps.
It is abundantly clear that Kevin Smith is no paragon of originality. But give him a little credit: he knows better than to watch something and then rip it off verbatim.
And I know better than to try to sue a famous director because his movie has a slight resemblance to one of my obscure creations. There are much more worthwhile uphill legal battles to be had.
Jojo Rabbit — During World War II, a German boy who has Adolf Hitler as his imaginary friend discovers his mother is hiding a Jewish girl.
This trailer makes a lot more sense than the 30-second TV spots. Should definitely have a Daily Kos review.
The Laundromat — I thought this movie about the Panama Papers had already come out on Netflix a few weeks ago. Maybe it’s expanding to select theaters. If it’s showing near you, I think you should go see it on the big screen.
The Lighthouse — AKALib sent me a message about this movie a couple of months ago, so I must at least check it out. Has he ever led you wrong?
Two men are holed up in a lighthouse. Already it sounds more interesting to me than the latest Marvel movie in which the existence of the entire universe is at stake.
Maybe Robert Pattinson’s trying to take a page from Leonardo DiCaprio’s career playbook. It’s actually kind of impressive this sort of movie is a wide release.
No, wait’s actually not. It’s not showing at the AMC Fairlane 21 in Dearborn, which I use as a sort of barometer for this kind of thing. That theater’s still showing Rambo: Last Blood (ugh).
According to Google, my closest options to see this movie are Royal Oak (the Main Art Theatre), Southgate and Windsor. That last one would involve an international crossing. I’ll check the Main Art Theatre showtimes...
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil — Angelina Jolie stars as Maleficent. I’m a little curious as to how this fits into the Sleeping Beauty story. Curious enough to look it up, but not curious enough to seek out the previous Maleficent movie, much less go see this one.
Miss Virginia — A single mother holds a politician to his promise of better education for all children.
Should definitely have a Daily Kos review.
Modern Love — With Tina Fey, something about a column in the New York Times. It’s a PrimeVideo release, but maybe it’s also in select theaters.
Prescience — Limited release about a gay lawyer with a mysterious new boyfriend and some terrible childhood secret.
Torrance — Was supposed to come out today, but maybe it’s been postponed?
Trick — Limited release movie about a serial killer.
Unlikely — Documentary about the dismal graduation rates of American college students. New York only.
Wounds — A New Orleans bartender picks up a mysterious phone left behind by a customer. Hulu.
Zombieland 2: Double Tap — I’m told the original is a masterpiece.
Should definitely have a Daily Kos review. Also would appreciate it if someone wrote a review of the first one.
