Most of the time we see Great Blue Herons standing very still, in watchful feeding mode. Sometimes we’ll hear their primeval kronk as they take wing, and see it passing by with slow flapping.
How does it shift from that flat horizontal flying mode back into its stately still vertical posture?
Settles its plumage, and ready now to stand quietly watching the shallow water again. A good look shows us this is a youngster, hatched this summer. Pretty skilled and graceful!

Rainy and blustery today in the PNW islands. Temps in low 50s. I’m off on vacation tomorrow (to the Olympic peninsula coast) so no more buckets hosted by me for a week.
What’s up in nature in your area today?
