Prompted by integrate (HT) I felt I had to poke around a bit in Michael Steele’s twitter history. Sort of like, “hey, how amazing would it be to find common ground with a conservative”. It worked out quite well. For example, here’s a recent piece he did on Rep. Elijah Cummings.
The Hill
Thurgood Marshall once said, “None of us has gotten where we are solely by pulling ourselves up from our bootstraps. We got here because somebody bent down and helped us.”
The legacy Elijah Cummings has given to us is a lesson in bending down and helping others.

He would often remind us of the simplicity of his mission: “I want justice, oceans of it. I want fairness, rivers of it.”
Already my allergies are acting up again. But what really did it for me was the reminder that politics can be something other than an ugly game. Heated discussions, sure. But borne out of mutual desire to come up with solutions that makes the world a better place.
I am honored to have spent time with him, learned from him, battled with him and to have watched firsthand how he managed the complexities of leadership.

There are many more bits I’m tempted to quote.
Thanks, Michael! Rest in peace Rep Cummings.
