I saw a large White Oak leaf lift off the patio and begin to glide toward the edge. Since there was no wind, I had to explore. The title photo showed the beetle I found under the leaf. This big boy didn’t scamper away. He had a very determined gait and an obvious reason to get there. I took a photo of the female of his focus.
These insects are herbivorous so I figured the cat was safe but maybe not my roses. I understand (but haven’t tested the information) these beetles will make a noise if disturbed. They hiss or screech by vibrating their legs against the wing guards (much like crickets) but for defense instead of mating or territorial announcement.
I see beetles often, but pay little attention unless my plants are in danger. This thing was a huge thrill and worthy of sharing. My imagination is stoked at such a large bug. I hope everyone finds nature as fascinating and follows an errant leaf to adventure.
What are the noticeable beetles in your area? Are they harmful or helpful? Do they contribute to a balanced ecosystem? The possibilities are endless.
Thanks for your time.
