I’ve been giving the current situation some thought, as I know have you, and I’d like to throw some things out there and get your opinions.
The impeachment will likely have the following possible outcomes:
1. Trump strokes out: This is not an idle thought. Imagine the stress the poor baby is under. If that happens, Pence is President and we fight them at the ballot box in November.
2. Trump resigns: It could be a Nixon Scenario, where the Republicans in the Senate tell him it’s time to go. Nixon did it because he loved the Republican Party and he wanted to salvage whatever future reputation he might have. Trump loves only Trump. I see this one as unlikely.
3. Trump is impeached, but not convicted in the Senate: This is the most dangerous, as it leaves a wounded beast in charge. God help us if the Republicans in the Senate don’t abide by their oaths to protect and defend the Constitution, but as we’ve seen, they care more about their own pockets than with the good of the nation.
4. Trump is impeached and convicted: Pence becomes President, and runs in November. Sigh. If we can’t beat Pence, again, God help us.
5. Trump is impeached and convicted, and refuses to leave: I can see Trump inciting a Civil War, I really can. Let’s just pray we survive it as the United States of America.
6. Trump and Pence are both impeached and convicted: Pelosi is President. The Republicans will do anything to prevent that, so here’s a possibility — the Republicans make a deal. We’ll convict Trump, but you leave Pence out of it. I can see that happening.
7. Worst case, Trump starts a major war to change the subject: You can hear it now, “We can’t impeach our glorious leader while we’re in a major war.” God help us.
If alternative #6 comes to fore, where the Republicans make a deal to give it to Pence, that will be very interesting. I think Trump will be impeached before Christmas, and the Senate will have the case early next year. I can’t see the Senate spending more than a couple of weeks on it — the GOP does not want this to drag out.
So if Trump is out and Pence is President, who will the Republicans run in November? The MAGA types love Pence. Who wouldn’t? I mean, a guy who calls his wife “Mother.” What’s there not to love?
But there’s one guy who thinks the nation owes him the Presidency — Milton Romney. So, the Republicans are going to have a food fight on their hands between Romney and Pence, and my money is on Romney. The message will be, “Let’s heal America, and move forward.” It won’t look so cool on a cap, but that will be Romney’s thing. After all, he is the White Horse Prophecy.
What do you think? What alternatives have I missed?
