Last weekend was our annual autumn trip back to the alma mater, which conveniently is where K1 is in her fourth year. The University does a whole Parents/Alumni/Reunion/Homecoming weekend thing with all sorts of special events, and this year was extra meliora because it also was the Inauguration of the University’s 11th President (and first woman!). We were able to attend both the Inauguration and the evening celebration and had a great time! Last week also marked 29yrs since my father died at the age of 58 from melanoma. With that in mind while visiting K1 and keeping up with K2’s soccer success, I really was focused on family. When a song about family played over the Sirius XM station we were listening to on the 400mi drive back, I knew I had my topic for tonight’s diary (unless you WANT to talk here about Impeachment, Primary Candidate Rox/Sux, or the utter wrongness of anyone believing it’s OK to fire someone because of who they love). So grab a beverage, remind yourself of how YOU are vital to the success of this diary series, and join me below the story break for songs mentioning family or family members...
Here at Top Comments we welcome longtime as well as brand new Daily Kos readers to join us at 10pm Eastern. We strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
I’ll start off with a few of my favorites, then hope you’ll bring yours to the comments!
- Look At Little Sister — Stevie Ray Vaughan — “What about the neighbors, what they gonna say” Honestly, little sister seemed to be having a hella good time.
- Daughters — John Mayer — I’d never heard this song til I heard a cover by a friend, then found the original and wow. Gorgeous musicially, even if the gender roles are a bit stereotypical. I think it holds such a place for me because it evokes for me the same feelings as the following song...
- Daddy's Little Girl — Steve Conway — The Al Martino version I link to here is the one we had at home, the one my Dad played and sang along to more times than I can count. I can’t listen to it without thinking of him.
- Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy) — John Lennon — Written for his son Sean, who he whispers goodnite to at the end of the song, this is the origin of the line “Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans”.
- Oh Daddy — Adrian Belew — I love the playfulness of this song, sung with his (then 11yo) daughter Audie.
- Mama — Genesis — OK, so it’s not about Mom. Or at least not the song protagonist’s Mom. According to Phil Collins, “what it is, is just about a young teenager that's got a mother fixation with a prostitute that he's just happened to have met in passing and he has such a strong feeling for her and doesn't understand why she isn't interested in him.”
- Mother Mother — Tracy Bonham — Another not so happy song. I swear I like families. Everything’s fine.
- We Are Family — Sister Sledge — As if I could end this list with any other song.
Now, my dear Top Comments family, on to what you come for every night… the trio of Top Comments, Mojo and Pictures we’re known for! Thanks to BeninSC for being my brother in collaboration.
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
Note: Please remember that comment inclusion in Top Comments does not constitute support or endorsement by diarist, formatter, Top Comments writers or DailyKos. Questions, complaints or comments? Contact brillig.
From BeninSC:
I am submitting this comment by Saralyn Fosnight about a very difficult pregnancy in the comment threads of Marissa Higgins’s diary about workplace discrimination, that always disproportionately affected women and minorities. Still does.
Highlighted by henrythefifth:
Is this astute comment by A Citizen, on the true nature of Twitler’s pronouncements.
Highlighted by A Siegel:
Is this comment by Mathy Kathy about the problem with unpaid campaign venues. Certainly Twitler complains. His plan is to stiff them, as he’s done so many times before.
Highlighted by Vetwife:
Is this partial rant comment by rflctammt, that tonight’s comment formatter (BeninSC) considers one of the most powerful comments he has read in quite some time. From Vetwife’s rec-list diary on frustrations about this critically important impeachment investigation.
