Many Republican senators are dodging questions on impeachment by saying that since they’ll be jurors in an eventual impeachment trial, they can’t make judgments or talk about it now. So does that mean it’s jury tampering when Donald Trump has lunch with Republican senators to make his case against impeachment?
Trump had lunch Thursday with Sens. Rick Scott of Florida, Josh Hawley of Missouri, John Cornyn of Texas, Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, John Barrasso of Wyoming, Tom Cotton of Arkansas, Patrick Toomey of Pennsylvania, and Cindy Hyde-Smith of Mississippi. Suffice it to say this was not a case of Trump reaching out to the undecided. It was Trump comforting himself by making his case to people who were going to fervently agree and kiss his ass.
According to Scott, the partial transcript of Trump’s July 25 call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was “a pretty good” defense. “I mean, they say it’s a call and there’s a transcript of the call and no one has said if you read the transcript of the call, there’s a violation of law.” That’s the level of excuse-making for Trump we’re talking about.
You probably shouldn’t hold your breath for members of team “I’m a juror so I can’t have an opinion” to rebuke their colleagues who met with Trump about how unfair the whole thing is.
