Billy Graham was almost brought down for getting too cozy with Richard Nixon. To the day he died, he eschewed overt involvement in politics. Sadly, it’s been apparent for some time that his son and heir apparent, Franklin, didn’t learn that lesson. He has used his father’s legacy to carry water for the religious right—and isn’t even trying to hide it.
If there was any doubt that Franklin didn’t learn the hard lesson that his father learned four decades ago, it was erased last night. Hours after the House voted on formal rules for the impeachment inquiry, Graham publicly wrung his hands about it on Facebook—and claimed, with a straight face, that Trump did nothing wrong.
I had to do a double take when I saw this. Graham was saying that Trump was actually doing “a good thing” by pushing Ukraine to investigate Biden.
Really, Franklin? So conditioning military aid on opening such an investigation is a “good thing”? And holding him to account for abusing his power in this manner is an attempt to “tarnish and embarrass” Trump with an “unjust inquisition”? Where did you get those talking points, from the Trump campaign?
I know you regret pushing so hard for Clinton to be impeached. But really, Franklin, this is ridiculous.
He posted a truncated version of this screed on Twitter.
We know what you really meant, Franklin. You’re calling evil good and good evil. I reminded Franklin that God doesn't think too kindly of such a mentality.
Let there no longer be any doubt—Franklin Graham is part of the swamp. And unless he comes to his senses and quickly, he’d best prepare to be drained.
