You have to know how to get there and have a reason to go, if you’re looking for Delay, Mississippi. I discovered this community twenty years ago and it is just the sort of place that appeals to my nostalgia. I found remnants, six decades removed, of the cotton gin, general store and stock yard that were abandoned to the Great Depression, while surveying a division of family holdings. I was glad to see young people coming back to this long forgotten rural setting even if it is displaced from it’s former glory.
Wandering the road past Angus cattle grazing between pine plantations, I looked for smaller things, simple things, items connected to the past. I found a few insects braving the Fall chill.
This natural spring (Artesian well) has a copper pipe inserted for public consumption. It likely quenches the thirst of the men running the nearby saw mill just as it did those that stopped for a sip in the past.
There was a spot where algae grew thick in the shallow ditch leading away from the spring. A Crane fly landed near by.
I checked on an old friend, that I was surprised to find, still clinging to life. It is possibly the oldest resident in the south end the county. I expect collecting the nuts was often enjoyed by animals and humans alike in times past.
There was only one bird that I was able to capture on film. There was a lone Black Vulture aloft.
I found one more thing that most folks don’t recognize. Part of a hill had been pawed at by deer and other creatures for the minerals in the soil. A small puddle of slurry formed at the base of the disturbance. The pool is easier for animals to enjoy the desired contents.
As a community, Delay has reverted to a time when humans first arrived there. I’m glad to know it’s history but thrilled to visit it now. Thank you for spending time with me. Join me again sometime.
