Good morning, Gardeners. Y’all might conclude from the title of today’s diary that I really ain’t got much to offer as regards actual “gardening” subject matter; you would be (mostly) correct. The Wife and I have both had serious workplace upheavals lately, so stuff around the yard just hasn’t been done. I did manage to get the 11 pepper pots cleaned out and mulched for the winter, but The Tomato Patch remains an eerily skeletal vision, especially before sunrise on a 20 deg morning...
The list of all the things that I haven’t done so far this winter is too long to get into here, but one thing I have done is acquire more tomato seeds. Free seed offers are common at Tomatoville, and I decided to take advantage of this one mainly because one of the offered varieties was “Girl Girl’s Weird Thing”. It’s said that the woman who named it did so in honor of her dog, “Girl Girl”, who liked to eat these tomatoes right off the vine...
My seed offer also included a “bonus” pack of something called “Mar Azul”. Not sure about this one, as it appears that it may be a commercial hybrid, but it is a stunning tomato. Maybe I can find room for it next season... More info here.
I’ve given some passing thought to what tomato varieties I may try next year (other than Big Beef), but it’s still early. That’s surely a topic for a future diary….
As I commented here a couple of weeks ago, I was in Gallatin, TN over the Veteran’s Day weekend for a gathering with some old college friends. We all attended Jr. college together, and later, The University of Alabama. Our hosting couple in Gallatin bought this house about 6 years ago, but only moved in back in February of this year. He is a retired military officer, who now works for some big bank, and she is an about-to-retire Federal employee. This is their 1st house; their whole careers were spent living in apartments while in government service...almost exclusively in the Far East.
A few more pics...one feature of the property that I like is the driveway, which runs through to the street behind. The building in the left of the picture is a detached garage/storage unit. I surveyed the place thoroughly, and decided that I could not live there. Just ain’t no good place to grow tomatoes…. ;/
I believe he told me that the house was built in 1920. This undated photo was taken sometime in the early 1920s...
A good time was had by all. Good food, much drink, and many precious remembrances…
Ok...this turned into a very “plus sized” open thread-type diary! Maybe I should have just posted a picture of a turkey, or a Pilgrim, or some such, and said “what do y’all want to talk about?” Anyway, I hope y’all have a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday, and if you are travelling, please take care and get home safely! Peace.
P.S…here
