I think that my current place of employment is the only job that I’ve had where I have actually gone to an off-site company holiday party...such as the holiday party I will be attending tonight.
On the whole, office Secret Santa contests, holiday potlucks, and even on-site holiday parties are...OK. OTOH, off-site holiday parties...usually, the off-site holiday party is quite a distance from home, first of all.
Secondly, I think that work is work and off-time is off-time and offsite (or even, occasionally, onsite) hoiiday parties conflate the two. I get that the casual type of socializing at the company holiday party can create some job opportunities; more often, I’ve also heard many many stories of inappropriate behavior under the influence of alcohol at the off-site holiday party becoming the hot “water cooler” gossip of the hour, day, or week.
It’s really not a scene that I like and I have, for the most part, been able to avoid...and I have.
Unlike previous jobs, I live quite close (walking distance) to my job and the off-site holiday party is about a block away. I don’t drink, so I’m not concerned about anything that I might do or anything that anyone else may do.
Plus...on the whole, my co-workers are a somewhat tight-knit group; I knew a few of them prior to me working at this particular company.
So I’ll show up for about an hour, get a few free eats, converse a little, and leave. Although I must confess that if some hot “did you see what so-and so- did at the party?” gossip comes up, I can’t say that I won’t listen to it.

Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
