Today was a snowy, rainy, slushy, people-who-live-in-New-England-should-know-how-to-drive-in-this-yet-here-we-are kind of day. The overnight snowfall is supposed to be miserable and poorly timed enough that even though the expected snow totals are only 6-8 inches, school is cancelled tomorrow in a bunch of local districts, including our own. I suspect Mr. Brillig will decide to work from home… besides the snow, the fact is our internet connection is as good or better as work, there is no commute, and facilities include a pettable pupdog!
Since my brain has now switched to snow day mode, step below the story break with whatever beverage makes you happy and lets see what OTHER December 2nd days have given us throughout history..
Here at Top Comments we welcome longtime as well as brand new Daily Kos readers to join us at 10pm Eastern. Stuff Happened:
1763 — Dedicationof the Touro Synogogue in Newport RI, the first in the United States (well, what would eventually be the US).
1804 — Napoleon Bonaparte was crowned Emperor of France at Notre Dame Cathedral.
1823 — The Monroe Doctrine was stated by President James Monroe in his 7th SOTU
1939 — LaGuardia Airport opened for travel.
1957 — A Portland OR DJ was fired after playing Elvis Presley’s version of White Christmas. Because, as station management said, 'it's not in the spirit we associate with Christmas'. Tell that to every 2019 radio station ever in December.
1970 — The Environmental Protection Agency began operation.
People Were Born:
1754 — William Cooper, among other things he founded Cooperstown NY
1939 — Harry Reid (D-Nevada)
1981 — Britney Spears. She is definitely old enough not to have her father grifting acting as her conservator.
People Died:
1814 — The Marquis de Sade
1859 — Abolitionist John Brown was hanged.
1990 — Composer Aaron Copland.
And your friendly Top Comments crew brought you (as they do EVERY day) a trio of Top Comments, Mojo and Pictures:
TOP COMMENTS
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down. Please remember that comment inclusion in Top Comments does not constitute support or endorsement by diarist, formatter, Top Comments writers or DailyKos. Questions, complaints or comments? Contact brillig.
