I don’t know how other Progressives feel about Tom Steyer, but the only reason I initially signed on (almost immediately) to his email campaign was my thought that finally, someone with big money could fund a grassroots movement to impeach. Now that impeachment is not only on the horizon but IS the horizon why isn’t Steyer using his resources and his public platform to help fund a grassroots movement to flood Washington D.C. with peaceful protestors?
Because I felt he obtained my name and email on somewhat “false pretenses,” I wrote Mr. Steyer this letter on December 10 2019:
Dear Mr. Steyer
When you first started NeedToImpeach I immediately signed the petition hoping that finally someone with the resources could help spread the word and support the movement to impeach.
Everyone said you were just using the petition as a way to build an email list for future political ambitions, but I hoped that you would devote your efforts to building the movement for impeachment.
I am disappointed that you chose instead to throw your hat into an already crowded field, instead of using your experience and talents to help accomplish the goal of impeachment — conviction in the Senate.
I urge, encourage and indeed plead with you to redirect your resources from your own 2020 presidential aspirations and instead support existing efforts to have a March on Washington. There is a slim hope to convict and impeach if we send a clear message to the GOP that the people in the streets want this man impeached, There are already several organizations including women’s organizations planning demonstrations and marches. But these organizations don’t have your financial resources and your experience.
I am asking that you put your own personal ambition on hold for 2020, and prove to those of us who signed on to your initial effort that we weren’t just suckered into providing our email for your own campaign.
It would allow you to drop out of a race that you won’t win (2020) without losing face and while burnishing your credibility and prospects for a later run.
Your campaign, especially now with Bloomberg's entry is unlikely to catch fire (neither will Bloomberg). But a battle of the white male billionaire’s jockeying to take on the current white male billionaire truly is not what our country needs in 2020.
We need a sea change in our STYLE of governing. Truly we need to stop electing someone we feel is an alpha male to take on the existing alpha male. We need to adopt a far more feminine style of management (regardless of the gender of the manager). Having you and Biden and Blomberg and now Buttigieg all vying to unseat the white alpha male on top to become the new alpha male with the same hierarchical perspective would not move our country into the future.
The old hierarchical order is crumbling (we are witnessing it’s last gasps). The old Newtonian science that supported logical linear rational “hierarchy” is being swept aside by the new quantum reality, which is nonlogical, nonlinear and NON HIERARCHICAL.
We need a far more relational, collegial, problem solving NON HIERARCHICAL style. I’m not saying a male can’t have it (Obama had it —One of many reasons the GOP hated him and we women loved him).
Biden doesn’t have it. Buttigieg doesn’t have it. Blomberg doesn’t have it. I haven’t seen enough of you to know if you do. It doesn’t matter — timing is everything. You can still have an HUGE impact on 2020 and do so much for this country — without sacrificing future political ambitions —by dropping out of the presidential race. NOW THAT THE IMPEACHMENT YOU WERE SO DEDICATED TO SUPPORT IS HAPPENING YOUR TALENTS AND RESOURCES ARE NEEDED TO HELP FLOOD D.C. AND THE CAPITAL WITH MILLIONS UPON MILLIONS OF PEACEFUL CITIZENS PETITIONING OUR GOVERNMENT FOR REDRESS OF GRIEVANCES.
This is your opportunity to put your money where your mouth was. You asked us to support your efforts to raise the alarm for impeachment, not for your own presidential run. This is your moment to show us that you have the country’s interests above your own.
Show me that, and then I might support you next time you run for president.
Respectfully,
As of this date, I have received no reply to my letter. Instead, my inbox is now flooded almost daily with emails from his campaign and his family thanking me for supporting Mr. Steyer (which I do NOT) and requesting that I donate to his campaign (which I will NOT).
I was going to let the issue lie, because under doctor’s orders I am NOT supposed to be blogging or stressing over politics (hard for a political junkie like me, but necessary for my stress level.) But I decided I would just post the letter here on DK and see, if enough other people feel the same way then maybe other’s will be inclined to give him the same message. If no one agrees with me that's OK too.
