Well, it’s done...something that I honestly didn’t think that I would ever see again in my lifetime. (Well, prior to 11/8/2016, that is.)
An occupant of the Oval Office was impeached by the United States House of Representatives for high crimes and misdemeanors and will face a trial in the United States Senate.
As the votes crossed the 216 threshold, I breathed in deeply. I felt a gulp in my throat and said, “Damn.”
I was...rather in awe of the moment, actually.
I vaguely remember some of the Senate Watergate Hearings and some of the 1974 public impeachment hearings in the HJC (I remember Barbara Jordan’s speech quite well). I remember the day that President Richard Nixon resigned.
As I have said, it was the beginning of my fascination and love of politics and journalism.
I do specifically remember that whatever was going on, this was some serious stuff; those hearings in 1973-74 seemed as if they were carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders.
I felt the same sense of...awe in 1998 when the House approved two articles of impeachment against President Bill Clinton. Yeah, President Clinton did wrong but I didn’t think that it merited his impeachment and removal from office.
But still...watching it unfold as it did in 1998 was rather...awesome.
And as for the procedeings of December 18, 2019.
And by “tool,” I mean a legislative tool link the filibuster or something.
and...there’s this
I have a lot more thoughts about the events of the past week but, for now, this will do.
Tops are below the fold.

Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
