My LTE on impeachment, Republicans as monarchists and the dangers of Trump as dictator published in a very conservative rural small town paper in a very red state.
All federal officers swear an Oath to the Constitution. President Trump did swear the oath, vowing “to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States”, but the President has shown no respect for the Constitution. He has called it a “very rough system, an archaic system . . . it’s a really bad thing for the country”. He has completely disrespected the House’s impeachment proceedings, calling it illegitimate, blanketly refusing to produce documents, and instructing all federal agency and White House employees not to honor subpoenas to appear.
Not only is Trump ignoring his Oath to the Constitution, but Republicans appear in lockstep with him, showing more loyalty to Party than to Constitution.
Jon Meacham, well-known presidential historian and always circumspectly nonpartisan, watching the hearings, declared on MSNBC that the Republicans were arguing that is was okay for Trump to have done “kingly things”, essentially in favor of a monarchy. He added “When did the Republican Party become the monarchists?”
Benjamin Franklin famously said we have a Republic, “if we can keep it”.
We are in danger of losing our Republic under Trump. We are on the road to a totalitarian dictatorship, similar to where Germany was in the 1930's.
Sinclair Lewis wrote It Can’t Happen Here, but we’re seeing that it can happen here. The America we grew up with is turning into something else.
Postwar Germans, asked how they could have supported the Nazis, admitted that it was because the economy was so good as the Nazis were gathering and consolidating power.
I’m surprised they printed this. It’s the third one I’ve done on impeachment in the last month. The others were on the House process as a grand jury proceeding and on the crime of bribery, but this one hits on the impending fascist state. If my local paper printed this, maybe others can get LTE’s in their rural areas and keep spreading the word on the dangerous times we’re in as a country
