It is the end of 2019, and I would normally write about what happened in the past year. Honestly, though, this year has been craptastic because of the current White House resident. So without further ado, I present what I would like to see happen in 2020. This list will cover a multitude of issues: some important, some not so important. Maybe a couple are tongue-in-cheek, and they are not really in any particular order.
- Donald Trump out of office. I do not care if he is convicted in his impeachment trial, if he resigns, or has some sort of health issue that forces him out. I want him gone. He is unstable, is the exact opposite of what the nation needs as a leader, and quite honestly the worst that humanity has to offer. I also do not want to hear that Mike Pence is worse. Pence is a sanctimonious, hypocritical, faux Christian, but he is not worse that Donald J. Trump. To any Republicans reading this, know that I do not hate Donald Trump because he is a Republican, I hate him because he is a horrible human being. I would despise him if he were a Democrat or an independent. He is not a leader, and is little more than a grifter and a con-man—and a bad one, at that.
- Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to lose his seat to Amy McGrath in 2020. No man has done more to cause damage to this country than Mitch McConnell. He has put party over country on a consistent basis, and his refusal to hold a fair trial in the Senate for Trump’s impeachment shows he has no desire to actually do his job as a senator, and as Senate Majority Leader. If any person deserves to lose an election, it is Mitch McConnell.
- For the Cleveland Browns, and/or the Detroit Lions to have winning seasons, and to go on to the Super Bowl. For the love of God, these two cities have suffered enough.
- I want to see the NCAA finally agree to allow college athletes to be paid and have endorsement deals. These young men and women are putting their bodies on the line, and are making colleges and universities billions of dollars. If they want to hawk Gatorade or Nike, they should be able to make a couple of bucks.
5. I would like to see American politicians, especially those on the right, start treating climate change with the urgency it deserves. We needed to do something two decades ago to attack this global problem. We have had to listen to right-wing politicians argue against doing something, anything, because it would hurt business interests. Seriously, what is wrong with these people? Hell, let’s look at their argument that the science isn’t sound. So what if it isn’t. Say we make all these changes to go carbon neutral, or carbon negative. What happens? We end up with cleaner air and water, making the world a better place. If the science is right (which it most definitely is), we end up saving the planet, humanity, and prevent a mass extinction. I really don’t see a downside here.
6. For the NCAA to come up with a real playoff system for Division I FBS football. Instead of using polls and other sleight of hand to determine a national champion, make it so that if you win your conference, you are in the playoffs. Independents like Notre Dame will need to join a conference, but that is small price to pay. Get rid of the horrible, meaningless bowl games, and create a real playoff system, with a true national championship. Enough of the garbage of letting polls determine who gets into the championship.
7. I would love to see the NRA die a horrible death, and once they are gone, I would love to see meaningful, well-researched firearms laws enacted that will actually reduce gun violence, and prevent mass shootings in this country
8. I want to see a world without racism, homophobia, and other prejudices. A world where people are free to be who they are without judgement, or fear. As difficult as it may seem to believe, we are moving in that direction, but there are always those who refuse to move forward.
9. When I was a child I was promised flying cars by the year 2000. It will soon be 2020, I still do not have my flying car—and I demand answers.
10. It is going to be 2020, and my greatest wish for the coming year is that we all treat each other with kindness.
Now obviously, this is not an all-inclusive list of everything that I would like to see happen in 2020. Which things would you like to see happen in 2020 and beyond?
