We made it to another year’s end! Depending on how you count it (I go with the cultural 0-9, not the scientifically accurate 1-10), we’re beginning a new decade at midnight. Hop across the story break and our reminder that without you, there is no Top Comments, and please be careful not to spill your glass of bubbly when you hop!
Here at Top Comments we welcome longtime as well as brand new Daily Kos readers to join us at 10pm Eastern. We strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
I took a quick look to see when in the past decade I’d hosted around New Year’s Eve or Day, and this is what I found:
Jan 1 2019 — A gentle entry into the New Year, sharing how NYE/Day went. I’d only been back from our Mexico vacation for two days, so gentle was necessary!
Dec 30 2017 — Wherein we used the word Penultimate, and reminded ourselves that even in an Annus Horribilus, good things happened.
Dec 31 2016 — Not only a leap year, but a leap-second year!
Jan 1 2015 — Welcomed in the year with food, and the setting of goals (see: 2013!).
Dec 31 2013 — wherein we had Ethiopian food for dinner, and I made observations I need to remember this year!
Jan 1 2013 — Oh cool, I both welcomed a new year into the archives and ushered it out! And first set goals not resolutions!
I clearly took a break around New Year’s Eve/Day for 2009-2012. Presumably small boy and busy family kept me away. But there were only two prior relevant diaries, both falling outside the decade lines no matter how you draw them...
Dec 30 2008 — Which happens to be the last year before K2 joined our family.
Jan 1 2008 — The first New Year’s themed TC of mine, and only my 8th TC diary ever.
I have to say, 2008 seems like a lifetime ago. Everything prior to Election Day 2016 does. But it was fun to revisit old memories, see what’s changed and what has not, and note that through it all what’s been most important to me are positives: family, friends, outlook. Not gonna lie, 2019 has been a slog of a year. But I look forward to 2020 in the same hope and optimism with which I’ve ushered in each New Year, and I hope you will too.
Thank you to everyone who sent in a comment nomination. Who recced a comment. Who recced the nightly TC diary, and commented and hung out with us. Who commented with instructions in OTHER diaries every time someone said “I’d make this a Top Comment if I knew how”. Who wrote TC diaries. Who formatted the Tops. Who stepped in on days when we had a hole in the schedule even though their OWN schedule was busy.
In other words, thank you to YOU. Yes, you. And let’s do it all again this year, except with MORE: more comments, more noms, more interaction, and more community. Because I have a feeling the 20’s are gonna Roar!
Let’s close out the year with one more set of Tops! Thanks to BeninSC!!

Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down. Please remember that comment inclusion in Top Comments does not constitute support or endorsement by diarist, formatter, Top Comments writers or DailyKos. Questions, complaints or comments? From DiesIrae:
I am submitting this great comment on respect in the primary process, from jjohnjj. In my opinion it captures exactly what our attitude towards this primary should be.
Here's a selected quote:
"The time to support the Democratic Nominee is not when the primaries are over. That time is now.
Translation: Treat every candidate with respect."
