Anonymous sources close to negotiations inside of the Democratic caucus in the House of Representatives report that Jerry Nadler has the Democratic votes in his committee to include, by a narrow margin, obstruction of justice as described in the Mueller report. It appears that a majority of the six committee chairs also favor to include the most obvious obstruction incidents from the 2nd half of the Mueller report backed by direct testimony of witnesses interviewed by Robert Mueller’s staff. The compromise sought is to include the most unambiguous incidents that reveal attempts to obstruct and cover up the investigation. Meetings over this weekend and over the previous weeks have intensified as President Trump’s impeachment became increasingly inevitable. A majority of the Democratic caucus is lobbying for the inclusion of obstruction of justice.
Today on the Sunday shows there seemed to be some public lobbying for keeping a narrow focus by Intelligence Committee Chairman Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), however comments today by Judiciary Committee Chair Jerry Nadler (D-NY) and Financial Services Chairwoman Maxine Waters (D-CA) seemed to signal they still favor holding the President accountable for more offenses.
To summarize, sources say that a majority of the Democratic caucus and the committee chairs favor the inclusion of obstruction of justice as an article of impeachment. The wild card is what Speaker Pelosi will allow to come to the floor. She maintains considerable sway on her members and it is not likely that we will see public grousing with what she decides.
