Republican Bill Weld once served as governor of Massachusetts. The last time we heard from him, he was running for Vice President in 2016 on the Libertarian ticket under Gary Johnson.
On February 15th in New Hampshire, Weld announced that he is “launching an exploratory committee to challenge President Trump in the Republican primaries.” Here’s more from the Boston Herald: www.bostonherald.com/…
Weld stated that the country is in peril and that he cannot stand to watch from the sidelines any longer, adding:
“We have a president whose priorities are skewed toward promotion of himself rather than toward the good of the country. To compound matters, our president is simply too unstable to carry out the duties of the highest executive office — which include the specific duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed — in a competent and professional matter.”
Bill Weld has been described as a fiscal conservative and a social moderate.
The GOP has been talking about canceling the 2020 primaries to protect Trump (www.npr.org/…). Apparently, the 2018 midterms didn’t get their attention.
If Weld’s campaign gains any traction at all, it might give John Kasich or Mitt Romney ideas as well. This could be interesting.
Right now, Trump is a little preoccupied with his “emergency” wall and that other guy...what’s his name?...oh, yeah. Mueller. Once he notices that his dictatorship is being challenged from within his own party, we can take bets on what stupid nickname he’ll create for Bill Weld.
Stay tuned.
