My former Governor, His Excellency William Weld, has announced that he will challenge Donald Trump’s quest for renomination in 2020. He served as Governor of Massachusetts from 1991 to 1997, challenged John Kerry for the Senate in 1996, then stepped down to fight ultimately unsuccessfully for confirmation as Bill Clinton’s appointee to be Ambassador to Mexico. In 2016 he was the Libertarian nominee for VP, but toward the end of the campaign advocated the election of Hillary Clinton as the only viable alternative to Trump. He has also run way behind for Governor of New York. Unlike the DNC which is bending over backwards to not show the slightest hint of bias the RNC is squarely behind Trump and state parties have threatened to cancel primaries and just award delegates to Trump. Current MA Governor and Secretary of Administration & Finance under Weld Charlie Baker has not committed his support. I don’t see this candidacy getting very far, but IMO it’s good to give any GOP voters not full Trump cultists someplace to go.
