Tina Russell filed for the state house seat currently filled by Eric Porterfield. Porterfield has been reveling in national coverage of his increasingly disgusting comments on gays. I don’t want to give him any more attention; there is plenty of that already. Instead I am going to focus on Tina.
I have known Tina for almost two years now. Both of us were involved in starting the West Virginia Working Families Party and we were both named co-chairs at the first meeting. So I know what she is like to work with as a political ally.
Here is Tina:
Yesterday was for you Mercer County and our entire beautiful state of West Virginia. Love for our neighbors has to be the central part of our politics.
I, Tina Russell, am running for the Mercer County House of Delegates.
I plan to fight with love to help create legislation that helps those recovering from addiction have access to longer term residential treatment care in the state of West Virginia, more comprehensive wraparound services for #children, that may decrease their need for out of home placement, and more funding to improve the public education system we already have, instead using public education dollars on Charter Schools we don’t need.
At the end of the day we all have more in common than would ever set us apart... I am thrilled so many have volunteered to help...Thank you to everyone for the well wishes. It means everything.

Here is a Facebook post from someone who knew Porterfield in high school.
Update: This is state house district 27, which covers parts of Mercer and Raleigh counties in the extreme southeastern part of the state. It is one of the most impoverished areas in the country.
