This is a series of diaries highlighting animal rescues around the world and noting and celebrating the work they do to help animals who have no voices but ours to speak for them. I have decided to make this a daily series because there are so many wonderful rescues out there who need human help and weekly just doesn't seem to be enough. I have long wanted to start a rescue but lack the resources or time available to do so right now so this is my attempt to do my part. I hope that these rescues will benefit from the kindness and benevolence of the community here at Daily Kos. They are amazing organizations and worthy of Kossack attention and care.
I am here, alive and all around you
I have no voice
In your trees, your air, your fields, your oceans, your world
I have no voice
I am a mother, a father, a protector, a soul
I have no voice
I can walk, crawl, sing, fear
I have no voice
You must be my voice

About Whiskers
Who We Are:
Whiskers Animal Benevolent League is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization registered with the New York State Charities Registration Bureau. We are Registered Rescue #RR-304 with New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets. We are a small, all volunteer-run, no-kill animal shelter in Albany, New York.
Here at Whiskers we believe every life is meaningful and worth saving. We go the extra mile to do whatever it takes to make each cat and kitten's life we commit to the best it can be. Every cat and kitten we take in gets Whiskers lifetime pledge to be there for them for their entire lives if need be.
Our Mission:
Our mission is to provide abandoned, abused, and stray animals with a place of comfort, safety, and health and ultimately find them loving, responsible, permanent homes. We specialize in helping animals that have no advocate, those that have been abandoned on the streets or who have been abused. Secondly, we seek to reduce the population of unwanted companion animals by arranging for their spay/neutering prior to their adoption. Finally, we seek to provide information to the public on how to better provide for and enjoy their companion animals.
To help fulfill our mission, Whiskers operates a shelter and maintains foster homes for housing lost, homeless, abandoned, injured or sick animals. We conduct fund-raising activities, solicit public contributions, and sell donated items to raise money to pay for the veterinary bills to alter, vaccinate, and restore health to these companion animals.

Meet Billy Boy
Billy Boy is a 10 month old mostly white male kitty who was rescued with his sister from outside. He is very shy and still learning to trust people. He is very playful, and once comfortable, will bounce and run around to get at his toys. He loves other cats and would be a great companion to another kitty. He needs a home that's willing to continue to work with him. Once he trusts you, he will allow you to scratch his neck and gently pet him. Please let Billy Boy learn to be your sweet kitty!
Approx. DOB: 4/10/2017
Whiskers cats and kittens are ALL rescued from the surrounding CAPITAL DISTRICT. All of Whiskers' cats and kittens are spayed or neutered, age appropriately vaccinated and tested for FELV/FIV prior to adoption. Go to www.ewhiskers.com/apply to fill out our online adoption application.
Barn Friends Forever
Barn Friends Forever is a special adoption program to place feral cats with owners of farms, stables, greenhouses, country estates, and other safe locations.
Feral cats are, for the most part, domestic cats that have been born outside and survive on their own. They often live in colonies and generally are fearful of humans. The ASPCA reports that the average life-span of a feral cat, that is not living in a colony supported by a human caretaker, is only two years. Those feral cats that are spayed/neutered and are lucky enough to have a caretaker who provides shelter, food and water, have a much longer life-span.
Each Spring, when kitten season rolls around, Whiskers is called upon to trap feral cats that are pregnant or have kittens. It is a very high priority for Whiskers to save these kittens from the harsh realities that come with being born outside to a stray or feral mother. Unfortunately, when we rescue these moms and their kittens, we often find pregnant sisters or "last year’s” kittens who also need help. Sometimes a caretaker is available, and the adults can be returned after spaying/neutering. And sometimes, if a foster home is available, the feral “teenagers” can be made adoptable. However, we find many cats that cannot be safely returned to their location or adopted as household pets.
People who adopt through the Barn Friends Forever program give these deserving cats another option that they desperately need, and in return they are rewarded with the presence of these beautiful and intelligent creatures with excellent mousing skills. It is known that cats that are well fed actually make better mousers than cats that are made to fend for themselves. We recommend adopting two or more cats at the same time as they are social animals and the companionship will help them make a more successful transition. There is no adoption fee, but donations are greatly appreciated.
Here's how it works:
- Whiskers will ensure that the cats are spayed/neutered, vaccinated (rabies & distemper) and tested for FeLV/FIV before adoption.
- Your cats will be delivered by a Whiskers volunteer who will help you get them settled in. The cats must be confined for 3-4 weeks while they adjust to their new surroundings and get to know their caretakers. Large wire dog crates and kitty condos are available for loan during the transition period. The adopter must feed, water and scoop their litter daily.
- When it comes time to release your cats, they will be familiar with the smells and sounds of their new home and will not think of you as strangers, but as the nice people feeding them.
- The adopters must be willing and able to provide the cats with food, water, and shelter daily, all year round. They are a responsibility and require a life-long committment of care.
If you have a place on your property and in your heart, and would like to adopt from Barn Friends Forever, please fill out our BFF adoption application.
