It’s no secret that Republicans are packing the courts with extremist judges all the way up to the Supreme Court, and that one of the reasons is to overturn Roe v. Wade to please the American Ayatollahs of the religious right. (They will overlook everything about Trump as long as he does that — and brings about the Second Coming.)
Trump waved the abortion issue in their faces last night because he’s getting nowhere on the Wall. He needed something to rile them up and rally them around him. Meanwhile, several states are moving to protect the right to choose by locking down choice in their laws, New York among them.
Trump attacked New York last night; Governor Andrew Cuomo responded in The NY Times today.
...Mr. Trump and the religious right are spreading falsehoods about New York’s law to inflame their base. Activists on the far right continue to mislead with the ridiculous claim that the act will allow abortions up to a minute before birth.
While Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the archbishop of New York, and the Catholic Church are anti-choice, most Americans, including most Catholics, are pro-choice. The 73 percent of New Yorkers who support Roe includes 59 percent of Catholics. While governments may very well enact laws that are consistent with religious teaching, governments do not pass laws to be consistent with what any particular religion dictates.

That is the Big Lie — that the Law will allow a mother to say in the delivery room “ I don’t want the kid — kill it.”
They are busy painting all Democrats as baby killers; it’s all over social media. They are going to ride this for all it’s worth, because abortion is one of those things that goes right to the gut and shuts down the brains of the kind of people who make up the GOP base. They need this for a distraction — even as they are throwing kids into prisons, ripping families apart, and taking away their healthcare. Cognitive dissonance is a feature, not a bug for Republicans. They are totally shameless. They have all the horror stories primed and ready to do. Here’s some truth from the people who’ve actually been there.
An acquaintance of mine came up with a response that pulls no punches. I figured it’s worth sharing. Trump has chosen to make this an issue because he and the GOP really need a distraction at this point, and because they really need to demonize Democrats even more than they already do. (So much for F***ing unity.) Here’s the graphic:
Don’t get sucked into arguments that drain energy away from the real issues, and don’t go defensive either. When they bring the bullshit up, just say “That’s a lie” and share the above graphic, and this link.
Resist.
