Good evening, Kibitzers! Surely everyone has heard by now that I went to the famous “side pocket Surprise Party” in San Francisco. I have zero pictures of the party, because Neeta had that covered (see her photo diary here). And when it comes down to it, I have a pretty limited number of other pictures, because most of the time that I was with people, I was just enjoying that. It was kind of like a tiny NN where it was miraculously not sweltering for once.
I will have a photo diary of Daily Kos HQ, though. I did not have time to put it together for tonight; better luck next week when I haven’t just been away from work for a week and a half.
And I probably have one or two other diaries worth of extremely random bits of public art, architecture, and vegetation that interested me as I wandered about, like this fabulous Tony Bennett heart at right. (The Hearts in San Francisco annual art installation benefits the San Francisco General Hospital Foundation. As with that cow-sculpture thing, the variously-painted hearts are displayed around the city, and are auctioned off at the end of each year.)
Today, however, I am posting all my food pictures. Honestly, I don’t have many and they’re not very good. But I really want you to see this drink, so you may as well see them all.
Let’s start with the less-good pictures, from one of the very, very best experiences. I was staying in San Francisco for the weekend. The day after the party, slksfca kindly invited me to see Beach Blanket Babylon, which I know he has raved about in these pages before. I have no idea how he managed to score last-minute tickets to sit in the front row; he just blinks innocently if asked.
The show is an ever-evolving musical revue that makes fun of absolutely everyone, including people and events that have become famous or infamous quite recently. It’s bawdy and very clever, and makes use of enormous, outrageous wigs and even more enormous and outrageous hats. Unless you are plagued by impeccable taste, I’m certain you’d enjoy it if you ever find yourself in town. I did, and it would never have occurred to me to go without this invitation, so I’m most grateful.
Anyway, after the show (at which we drank champagne!), we sought food. The little Grubstake Diner we went to was perfect. I apologize for not stopping to arrange the food on my plate more artistically, but it was really all I could do to shoot the picture before I grabbed the burger. This is a “patty melt”, a classic diner treat consisting of a Swiss cheese burger on toasted rye, with grilled onions. We each had one, and I ordered onion rings as well because they were obviously going to be good there, and they were.
About this chocolate milkshake: the green thing sticking out of the top is a straw, but the little red globe that looks as if an undersize maraschino cherry is levitating just a bit? It’s the light fixture in the distant background. Why, sure, I definitely meant to do that.
Okay, so now, let’s back up to Saturday morning. smileycreek and paradise50 were in town for the party, but needed to go home the next day because they’d left mimi2three in charge of the dogs, and what sort of trick is that to play on a nice woman like mimi2three? They were able to meet me for brunch before they left, and chose a place near my hotel that their magical phones told them would not be too crowded.
I’m rather sad that the Daily Grill’s website doesn’t show a brunch menu. Oh, the food is the same as on the breakfast menu. Here are the crabcake Eggs Benedict that smileycreek and I had,
and here’s paradise50’s Protein Scramble (sausage, bacon, spinach).
It’s just that the Bloody Marys delivered to my friends were so monumental, I’d have liked you to be able to see the brunch cocktail descriptions, just so you’d know I didn’t concoct this in Photoshop or something. Yes, it does have a grilled shrimp in it. And an olive and a hot pepper, I believe, in addition to the other flora you can spot.
And with that, as I have nothing any fancier to offer today, I bring you the updated KTK boilerplate. We’ll speak more of this in the comments, I’m sure.
❤️ 💙 ❤️ 💙 ❤️ 💙 POSTCARDS TO VOTERS! 💙 ❤️ 💙 ❤️ 💙 ❤️
If you enjoyed helping turn out Democratic voters in 2018 by writing simple postcard messages to them, here’s another chance to be of help: Lisa Neubauer is running for Wisconsin Supreme Court, the election is on April 2, and early voting is already underway! The election is nominally non-partisan, but this is a retiring liberal’s open seat, and she is the liberal candidate. We need to retain the seat, and doing so would position another liberal judge to win a retiring conservative’s seat next year in what will hopefully be a big blue wave, and thereby change the balance of the court, yay!!!!!
If you can write some cards, see the diary up right now, or go to PostcardsToVoters.org directly. They have a couple of other current campaigns now too, but we have cried and laughed with our Wisconsin friends for so long, this is personal. (You can also donate to Judge Neubauer’s campaign at the link above on her name.)
Yet a third hurricane season starts June 1, and Puerto Rico is still struggling to recover.
It is Day 538 since Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico.

PUERTO RICO and USVI DISASTER RELIEF DONATION LINKS
The Daily Kos community has its own project: Puerto Rico resident Bobby Neary (newpioneer) leads a small team dedicated to helping a specific rural elder who was left by the storms without power, water, a roof, or any belongings but a moldy mattress. If you like to see concrete results, this is the project for you. See newpioneer’s diaries for ways to help. See this one in particular, and this comment with photos. See also his lovely and heartbreaking poem.
