Conservative Judge Brian Hagedorn’s campaign for the Wisconsin Supreme Court against Judge Lisa Neubauer, the choice of progressives, has not gone well:
That last bullet point, however, just changed: The Republican State Leadership Committee, which ordinarily supports candidates for state legislature, just parachuted in with a reported seven-figure ad buy to rescue Hagedorn ahead of the April 2 election next week.
The RSLC is spending on a broad spectrum of TV, radio, online ads, and mail, all to try to paint Neubauer—an even-handed, fair-minded, and independent jurist—as a “radical.” The ads also leave no doubt about what kind of judge Hagedorn would be on Wisconsin’s highest court: They tie him directly to Donald Trump and wrongly claim that Neubauer’s supporters have perpetrated “false attacks” against him, “just like they did to Justice Kavanaugh.”
The importance of winning this race can’t be overstated. Above all else, the Wisconsin Supreme Court will be in a position to rule on any redistricting plans for the coming decade. That’s why the RSLC is diving in at the last minute with so much money. If Neubauer wins this seat (which is currently held by a retiring liberal justice), progressives can then flip the court’s 4-3 conservative majority next year by defeating a Scott Walker appointee.
A liberal court would be able to clamp down on future GOP gerrymanders and ensure fair maps. A conservative bench would do just the opposite, allowing Wisconsin Republicans—who’ve already perpetrated some of the worst gerrymanders in the nation—to run wild.
Please donate $3 now to help Lisa Neubauer turn back this Republican onslaught and ensure fairness for Wisconsin.
