The 2020 Democratic presidential primary just got a little more crowded, with the entry of former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper. In his announcement video (watch below), Hickenlooper frames himself both as someone with a history of standing up to bullies—over footage of Donald Trump—and as a uniter who “brought environmentalists and oil and gas companies to the table to create the toughest methane emissions law in the country.”
Hickenlooper, who it’s safe to say will not exactly be holding up the left side of the primary field, makes the kind of argument for himself as an executive that’s more available to governors than senators, stressing his experience responding to “historic drought, thousands of acres in flames, and ... the worst floods in a hundred years.”
Hickenlooper follows Washington Gov. Jay Inslee as the second governor in the primary. One of his state’s senators, Michael Bennet, is also reportedly considering a presidential run.
