I used to say that satire makes us laugh, but then we think which is pretty much what this nice long wiki article says below. Or sometimes, it makes us wince. Sometimes we cheer it on and sometimes we look at it and want to scream. Sometimes it is great and sometimes it is just too much. But it is important. Often, a satire is one of our favorite books of all time and we remember it in times of great trouble.
...
Why I started thinking about satire. In Pratchett’s Men at Arms, Sgt. Colon says:
'It's bad enough barging into Guild property, but we'll get into really serious trouble if we shoot anyone. Lord Vetinari won't stop at sarcasm. He might use' -Colon swallowed- 'irony.'
And he might even do worse and get satirical … (Pratchett spells it satyrical for the word play).
….
I am sure you all know what satire is, but I will add a bit from wiki because it was a worthwhile article.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satire
Satire is a genre of literature, and sometimes graphic and performing arts, in which vices, follies, abuses, and shortcomings are held up to ridicule, ideally with the intent of shaming individuals, corporations, government, or society itself into improvement. Although satire is usually meant to be humorous, its greater purpose is often constructive social criticism, using wit to draw attention to both particular and wider issues in society.
A feature of satire is strong irony or sarcasm—"in satire, irony is militant"—but parody, burlesque, exaggeration, juxtaposition, comparison, analogy, and double entendre are all frequently used in satirical speech and writing.

The rules of satire are such that it must do more than make you laugh. No matter how amusing it is, it doesn't count unless you find yourself wincing a little even as you chuckle.

Update: the $15,000 match has been met! WooHoo! But the Ride is three weeks away, and they have only raised 35% of their goal. You all know how funding has been cut for agencies like AIDS Services of Austin. They literally put food, meds and other help into hands that… need help. So please — if you missed the match part earlier, we still need your donations.
