Watching William Barr in action since being confirmed as AG has raised a continuing question in my mind. Why? He had a a stint as AG on his resume and a sufficiently good reputation, outside the intense current political struggles in Washington, to continue making a fortune in private practice, even if just in right wing and big business circles. Why would anyone in that position want to risk destruction of their reputation by being associated with the slime and muck of Trump, never mind vigorously pursuing it via a concerted audition in the form of his unsolicited 14 page letter. I had a faint hope he could have a motivation like Mattis, i.e., seeking to take on the role of the mature expert adult in the room regarding Justice policy. But seeing his slant more toward being a civil and erudite version of Roy Cohn on behalf of Trump, thereby squandering his reputation if he seeks to go back to the private sector, a light bulb turned on. He is looking for a Supreme Court appointment. Persuade me that after delivering the goods for Trump, that Trump won’t eagerly nominate him (if an opening occurs) and the Republicans in the Senate won’t ram Barr through in just a couple of weeks. Please, convince me this is far fetched fantasy. Please!
