After the Cards Dodgers game, we hit the rack. The morning we slept in until almost 11. That ended up making us short of catching the Cincinati game. Too bad. I remember 7th grade and my English teacher put the Cincinati series game on during class. That shows you how old I am that they had World Series day games. We had lunch at an Irish pub and took a few pictures of the Arch.
The Cathedral Basilica of St.Louis was one of the largest, most guilded and detailed Churches I have ever been to. Really fantastic.
We went to a to a restored and exept for the hotel, an very underused St. Louis train station that used to have 120 trains a day go through it.
Now there are 2 Amtrak trains a day through St.Louis. Then we went to East St. Louis. This is definietly the other side of the river. They at one time had 8 fire stations. As the city went through a cycle of decay, that was reduced to 4. A very heavy load of fires, very busy and understaffed stations. Then one night a fire came in and they responded. While they were out at the call, an arsonist came in and torched the station. The city did not have the money to replace it. So now 3 stations. Urban renewal by destroying African American neighborhoods and laws that rewarded companies for moving companies overseas. East St.Louis had car part manugaturing and all those job went poof.
Now allmost all the construction there is government service buildings and public housing.
A great American tragedy. I only hope that these things can be fixed. This is where hope and work need to be applied. If the Dems can fix this they willl be heros. I played Duke Ellingoton’s East St. Louis Toodle-O while going through town. And the East St. Louis Blues. The feds certainly aren’t doing anything about it now.
We were really behind and we hit the road.
Now we are in Illinois. No welcome to Illinois sign on 50 here. We crossed the state in a few hours.
50 presents flat land and a lot of dairy farms. The quality of the farms was obviously more healty than the farms in the west.
We only stopped for gas and our pictures every 100 miles.
2500 miles to 2700 mile today.
Into Indiana. More farms. The land is a little more hilly here and there. The farms again are really nice, and they seem to be going strong. We get to the bestest name for a town. Loogootee, Indiana. Hotel. And in the morning breakfast at the Corner Cafe. Very recommended.
