While Democratic candidates make their case in the early primary states, the Democratic National Committee is setting its sights on Donald Trump and his broken promises to voters in key swing states. The DNC is launching a war room to coordinate a major digital ad campaign, billboards, and press events highlighting the promises Trump made and the local effects when he broke them.
That means that if Trump shows up for a campaign event anywhere near Lordstown, Ohio, “the DNC will highlight the administration’s efforts to cut $1.75 million to fund a transition center there to help laid off General Motors employees.” The effort won’t just focus on Trump’s actions as president, either.
The DNC will draw on a database of 7,000 lawsuits involving Trump and his businesses, many stemming from his habit of stiffing small contractors who do work for him. Just as 2012 voters heard about the local, human effects of Mitt Romney’s business career, 2020 voters will hear about the people Donald Trump, billionaire businessman, screwed over. And about the workers wooed by big promises from Donald Trump, presidential candidate, only to be left behind once he was in the White House.
“People have absorbed the fact that he isn’t truthful. The real question here is ‘have they benefited or not?’” said a media consultant working with the DNC. “We think the answer is no.”
