Last night, the White House shot down reports that the stunningly racist idea of retaliating against sanctuary cities by busing migrant detainees there was ever a serious consideration. “This was just a suggestion that was floated and rejected, which ended any further discussion,” read a White House statement given to the Washington Post. Apparently, the crackerjack White House comms team forgot to consult their Comms Director.
Trump topped off that genius tweet with another one asserting that the move should make the “Radical Left ... very happy” since they support “Open Borders.”
Here’s how the (dare we call it) policy initiative was first reported by the Post:
“It was retaliation, to show them, ‘Your lack of cooperation has impacts,’ ” said one of the DHS officials, summarizing the rationale.
Stunning. You really just have to be a stone-cold racist to think that transporting migrants to immigrant-friendly cities would have somehow been a master stroke. Clearly, Trump still thinks it is. Not to mention the unconscionable act of using terribly desperate and helpless people as political pawns.
Oh, and by the way, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell thinks Republicans are going to be able to “downplay” immigration as an issue in 2020 by focusing on Democrats’ “socialist policies.”
As Nancy Pelosi said at her Friday press conference: “Oh, c’mon.”

UPDATE: FWIW, Washington Post is reporting that a DHS official says the agency is not drawing up plans to implement Trump’s proposal. Of course, the WH and DHS both said yesterday this idea wasn’t under consideration anymore either, so it’s pretty hard to know what’s actually happening in Trump’s WH/administration.
