A poll conducted by Civiqs for Daily Kos found that, by and large, Americans disapprove of the white supremacist in chief’s lackluster performance in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria ripped through the area in September of 2017. According to the poll only 35 percent of Americans approve of Trump’s handling of relief efforts in Puerto Rico. In contrast, 52 percent of Americans disapprove of the orange one’s weak response.
Most of the numbers are to be expected, with Democrats disapproving at a 92 percent clip and frequent viewers of Fox News genuflecting the lowest to Trump at a 75 percent approval rating. One interesting thing to point out here is that in general, Trump’s approval and disapproval ratings are relatively consistent. And since Trump has been in office his approval ratings from Republicans hover around 90 percent (yes, it is depressing).
Here are Trump’s general job approval ratings for comparison.
But, according to this new poll, conducted during the first week of April, only 70 percent of Republicans “approved” of his crap response to Puerto Rico. Yes, this is still a sizable majority, and it signifies a level of racism that can seem and feel impenetrable at times, but it’s a real drop in enthusiasm. Those conservatives are not willing to say they disapprove, as the 14 percent “neither approve nor disapprove,” and seven percent “unsure,” numbers show. But it means that there is at the very least, pause, for some of the blind partisanship that can be so disappointing for all of us.
Considering that this is where Puerto Rico was a year after Hurricane Maria hit the island, any numbers above a 1 percent approval rating are still too high for humanity’s sake.
