I’m very impressed. Watch as presidential candidate Kamala Harris, a Democrat from California, confidently talks about ‘identity politics’ and why we shouldn’t shy away from talking about critical issues like race, gender, sexual orientation, and civil rights.
Here is an excerpt from what she explains in the short clip, which has since gone viral on Twitter:
“From my perspective, the term ‘identity politics’ is the new word—is the newest version of that phrase ‘race card’.
So people will talk about: oh, we can’t talk about ‘identity politics’, right? And so when they bring that up it’s meant to either marginalize the topic of discussion or to shut you up or to quiet you down.
So here’s what I think about that: where America stands on those issues which are often about civil rights, where America stands on those issues is about America’s identity.”
Harris speaks the truth here and lays out exactly where we should be as a party. I couldn’t be more proud to be a Democrat when I see another Democrat speak in such clear and definitive terms about our values.
Here’s the video, embedded in the tweet below:
The important issues and core values that Democrats have championed for years, we champion for all Americans. This is what separates our party from dark forces on the right—who believe our country’s identity is small and limited to one group of Americans.
“So don’t come at me Democratic Party don’t fall into a trap of saying: oh we can’t talk about identity politics. What? Where America stands on those issues is about America’s identity.”
Harris talks about not falling into a trap and she’s right. New ‘race card’ terms like ‘identity politics’ are meant to divide us. Conservative forces employ these divisive terms all the time—hoping some might follow them, as if they are a magic elixir to win elections.
We must never allow Republicans or anyone else to dictate who we are as a party, as Harris so passionately lays out here. Kamala Harris’ voice is powerful and clear. We should follow her lead.
