You know that feeling of being overwhelmed by the pace of news—mostly horrifying news—in the Trump era?
The small but mighty editorial team at Daily Kos lives in that firehose eight to 10 hours a day, dedicated to bringing context, insight, and analysis to the day’s events. Readers often wisely choose to take a deep breath, dip into news, then turn their attention to their own personal lives and jobs.
But for our team, this is their job. And it’s a tough one.
The Daily Kos editorial team analyzes the Trump era news every day to bring you the latest information. We are $123,742 from hitting our fundraising goal. Can you support their work by giving $5 today?
The day starts on the East Coast with our managing editor, Barb Morrill, facing the storm of presidential tweets, more stories about immigrant children in cages, and horrors that range from proposed laws to apply the death penalty to women who seek abortions to gutting protections for the environment as the world burns. From these nuggets, she creates a list of stories for our writers to weigh in on for the day.
East Coast, Midwest, and Rockies writers begin checking early—Laura Clawson, Mark Sumner, Joan McCarter—with our two copy editors, Emily Epstein White and Karen Freund, beginning their day as well. The writers scan the list Barb has created as well as bringing their own assignments to the table. The West Coasters then check in as well—writers Hunter, Meteor Blades, Kerry Eleveld, Gabe Ortiz and Dave Neiwert, and copy editor Erika Chavez.
All day, this remarkable team strives to avoid the simplistic “he said, she said” so common in traditional news, and to help progressive readers understand the consequences and stakes in the whirlwind of daily events.
And because we are immersed deeply in this flow, we understand how overwhelming today’s news cycle can be. Not just overwhelming, but almost paralyzing at times.
We don’t just want to bring you paralyzing news—we aim to bring you news you can do something about.
By collaborating with our amazing Activism team, we do all we can to pair actions with our news posts. What agency is currently taking public comments about an issue important in the progressive world? What unsuitable nominee is slated to appear before a key committee, and who can you contact to put pressure on? What advocacy group is doing work on the ground that we can support, financially or with amplification, to further our cause? What up-and-coming candidate has a chance to flip a red seat in a legislature or in Congress?
Daily Kos holds a unique place in the progressive movement; we provide information to our community, and the tools for them to take direct action. Can you chip in $5 to help us continue our work?
As the day winds down, the East Coasters check out and the West Coasters continue on, until evening sets in and we have one less day in the Trump administration to deal with, but knowing that tomorrow the cycle begins again.
And so it goes.
This small team of writers and editors work, day in and day out, to contextualize and to carry the fight on even when news is grueling and heartbreaking—because we are fighters, just like our readers. To keep this fight alive, we occasionally will be turning to our community of activists and readers for funds, and to continue to ask that you read and share our stories with friends and family. Now is one of those times.
Please, we are just $123,742 from reaching our goal. If you can, chip in $5 to help us soldier on, and to expand our ranks as we move into what we are determined to bring about: a more progressive future.
