Motherboard has the inside scoop as to why Twitter executives have been so reluctant to ban white supremacist content on their platform. In a Twitter meeting, a "technical employee" explained to a questioner that it was because applying any content filter that flagged white supremacist posts would likely also catch posts by some Republican politicians.
The employee argued that, on a technical level, content from Republican politicians could get swept up by algorithms aggressively removing white supremacist material. Banning politicians wouldn’t be accepted by society as a trade-off for flagging all of the white supremacist propaganda, he argued.
Yes, imagine the public outcry that would ensue if banning white supremacist content from Twitter resulted in banning white supremacist posts from Republican lawmakers on Twitter. Can't have that.
