As a young man, a teenager in the sixties, I was one of millions of idealistic individuals who sincerely believed that our collective actions could transform society. Today I have come to realize that very few of the children of the sixties have not succumbed to the cynicism that often replaces idealism.
I am now sixty-nine years old, my body is afflicted with ‘cells gone mad in a world gone mad’, and I may be ‘circling the drain’.
But I had an idea...and as my time grows short, I don’t want to waste my time and resources on a naïve endeavor.
I have purchased the web domain, adoptanewvoter.com. My plan was to create a website where potential donors could link up with individuals who have a desire to register and vote, but lack the resources to acquire the documents required to register and perhaps the means of transportation to both register and vote.
This website would offer a drop down menu linking to a page for each state, giving an overview of registration requirements, as well as a more definitive summary of each state’s voting laws.
Both applicants and donors would create screen names to protect their identities, and each applicant would provide a brief description of the circumstances which impair their capacity to register and vote.
Sponsors would create an account with a ride service such as Uber or Lyft, and access to those funds would be at the discretion and direction of the sponsor through an as yet to be determined process.
I also wish to offer a venue for political ads, with the caveat that advertising would not allow any reference to opposing candidates and/or political party. Only the individual candidate’s positive ideas and governing proposals would be allowed, with specific words such as ‘democrat’, ‘republican’, ‘liberal’, and ‘conservative’ disallowed. Candidates would not be permitted to identify which political party they are affiliated with.
I am not wealthy in a financial sense, my income is in the five figure realm. My conversations with a web designer put the minimum cost of my desired website design at $2,000, and the monthly hosting fee at $200. I intend to cover these costs by foregoing next winters Florida vacation, and am not soliciting donations.
I welcome criticism and/or positive feedback. Any ideas or offers to participate in the design and administration of said website are welcome.
