Day Three on our great American road trip on US Hwy 50. Starting today in Fallon, NV. First stop was Grimes Point Archeological site. Petroglyphs from @3000 to 8000 years old. Across the road is a Naval Air Station Fallon. While we were contemplating the thought process of people 7000 years ago and what their rockwork might mean, 6 fighter jets take off across the road. What would these artists and scribes thought of the large stone birds screaming like a thousand roughlegged hawks? We drove through a series of ranges and high valleys. The highest pass was Connor Pass at 7723 feet, and we saw many beautiful mountains, some still in deep snow. Today’s birds were ravens, vultures, a merlin, and some horned larks. We are seeing that we might be too early in the season for a lot of birds. migration is not yet in full swing. This part of US 50 follows the Pony Express route active from 1860 to 1861, made obsolete in late 1861 by the telegraph that would run along a similar route. The Overland stage to Sacramento also passed by the same place at Cold Springs. The Pony Expess way station there did not even have a roof because there was no wood to build one. Just stone walls and a fireplace. A cold hard place to work. We saw many peaks in Nevada over \/////10,000 feet, including Wheeler Peak 13,083 feet At Baker, we saw a site that showed some of the pre-columbian Fremont cultue. A hard life by a creative and determined people. I have admired Ojibwa’s postings on native cultures, maybe he has done one on the Fremont that would be interesting to read. At the state line near Baker, there is a gas station and casino, with the casino in Nevada and the gas pumps in Utah. Go figure. One of the highlights was towards the evening, we stopped at Sevier Lake in Utah. Normaly a dry salt flat, it was mostly covered with a few feet of water due to spring runoff. Magnificent, and reflecting all the mountains around it. A very quiet moment. We take pictures at the state lines and every 100 miles on the road. We are at 790 since we left the Pacific Ocean behind. We drove over 1200 miles from Spokane to S.F. Even though today US 50 starts in Sacramento, we are counting from the beach partially because 50 at one time sent to S.F. and also because we are going from sea to shining sea. We are travelling back in time as we go eastwards, I think. Geologists my chip in but I think mountains get older as you go east. Dining today was average but saved by pie. Pi is good. Pie is way better and its roundness reflects pi but its filling represents a cornucopia of American yumminess. Today’s was cherry and yesterday banana split for me and coconut cream for Greg. My brother Greg served as a fire fighter for over 43 years (mostly in Spokane and retired a Captain), and I just did 32 and retired as as a tailboard riding iron head and a hoseman. We are getting along quite well so far. We shall see if we are still speaking after 7000 miles. So far an excellent adventure. Only one establishment with Faux News on. We avoid those. In Austin Nev. the lady at the bar describes the rank discrimination againt Chinese immigrant miners. They had to traverse around town in the tunnels that run under the town. They also had sundown laws and the police bell rang at 9. After that they were subject to fines jail or hanging, said the clerk. We left Austin with heavy hearts. If you want us to drop by, leave a note. One more thing. I am not a drinker, but Greg is collecting a six pack og beer from every state we pass through. if you have a suggestion for your state, let us know. there wil bwbe a party in Spokane upon arrival.
