This week, we’re helping a Houston elementary classroom with engineering aid drop packages and a North Carolina high school lab with various chemistry experiments, including a disappearing rainbow demo kit. We hope that readers who support quality public school education will help by sharing or supporting our featured projects.
The Inoculation Project is an ongoing, volunteer effort to crowdfund science and math projects for red-state public schools in low-income neighborhoods. As always, our conduit is DonorsChoose.org, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation that facilitates tax-deductible donations to specific, vetted projects in public schools.
Last week, we made lots of headway on a Texas elementary school librarian’s project, so we should be able to complete it this week. The project currently receives 3x matching funds from the Overdeck Family Foundation: Overdeck Family Foundation is thrilled to help bring the Boston Museum of Science's best-in-class STEM kits to classrooms across the country, and help facilitate exciting outside-of-school learning experiences for your students.
MAIN PROJECT
Resources: Help me give my students a "To The Rescue: Engineering Aid Drop Packages."
Economic need: More than three-quarters of students from low‑income households
Location: Woodview Elementary School, Houston, Texas
Total: $477.84 (3x matching funds from Overdeck Family Foundation)
Still Needed: $146.54 Completed, thank you! Please consider project below.
Teacher’s Comments from Mrs. Caesar:
My Students: I am a librarian in a suburban school in Texas. This will be my second year as a librarian and it is the best job ever! There are about six hundred students from Pre-K to fifth grade at this Title I school. 85% of the students are Hispanic and 93% of our students are economically disadvantaged.
We are proud of how hard the children work and want them to be successful!
Our school's mission is to provide the appropriate tools and strategies to ensure the success of every child.
My Project: Our library makerspace needs some "Engineering Drop Package" to add some additional fun and learning for our 4th and 5th grade STEM students. This kit will have kids learn how to drop items from airplanes and buildings and the item not break! What a great kit! I bet many people have done the famous "egg drop" project. It teaches students not only engineering skills, but critical thinking and team work. Our students are economically disadvantaged, so it is important that we provide them with as many different experiences as we can. Our ELL students really benefit from these hands on learning experiences. We appreciate your support and generosity!
Donations of ANY size can make a BIG difference!
Eastern Bluebird found our new long-term project that will provide a North Carolina high school lab with materials to conduct a variety of chemistry experiments. This is Ms. Perez’ first project!
LONG-TERM PROJECT
Resources: Help me give my students some Chemistry laboratory kits that they can use to better understand and enjoy the concepts we are learning in class.
Economic need: Nearly all students from low‑income households
Location: Vance County High School, Henderson, North Carolina
Total: $561.40
Still Needed: $461.40 $231.69
Teacher’s Comments from Ms. Perez:
My Students: The students from our school are from low economic background and 100% of them are receiving free breakfast and lunch. Our teachers and administrative staff are working hard to inculcate to the students the importance of getting an education because it is a means to help them have a better life in the future.
They may be economically disadvantaged but they are interested to learn and explore.
They are always hoping to have resources that can make learning exciting and fun through hands-on activities.
My Project: Students will have better understanding of Chemistry if they can see and observe chemical reactions. They will be motivated to learn and come to to class if enthusiasm is sustained by if giving them the opportunity to explore and conduct lab activities in class.
Your donations will be tremendously appreciated by my students because it will surely help them in their education.
My students will be excited to try these new laboratory kits because they love to perform and do experiments - they are always looking for more. These activities are necessary to help them comprehend the topics related to it.
Donations of ANY size can make a BIG difference!
Two of last week’s projects were completed with the assistance of our donors! Here are the teachers’ thank you notes:
Investigating Cellular Energy: Thank you so much for donating to our project. My students love labs and when they hear they will get to do another lab, they will be so excited!! The concept of cellular energy is a difficult one for students and I believe that this lab experiment will help my students truly grasp this concept. I can't wait to try it with them. Thanks again for your generous donation to my class project.
With gratitude,
Mrs. Fine
Super Science: Thank-you so much for helping my classroom receive the Super Science magazine. Thank-you to the Daily Kos for sharing my project with your readers and helping my classroom and so many others through your outreach. We look forward to receiving our first magazine. We hope to receive one this year, but due to it being an 8 month subscription, it may not start until the next school year. I'll share pictures when we dive into our first issue!
With gratitude,
Mrs. Shaw
Mrs. Shaw also signed up here last week to thank us! www.dailykos.com/...
Founded in 2009, The Inoculation Project combats the anti-science push in conservative America by funding science and math projects in red-state classrooms and libraries. Our conduit is DonorsChoose.org, a crowdfunding charity founded in 2000 and highly rated by both Charity Navigator and the Better Business Bureau.
Every Sunday, we focus on helping to fund science or math projects, preferably in neighborhood public schools where the overwhelming majority of students come from low-income households. We welcome everyone who supports public school education — no money is required!
Finally, here’s our list of successfully funded projects — our series total is 734! The success-list diary also contains links and additional information about DonorsChoose.org.
