I hope everyone had a good weekend! It’s Monday, April 8, 2019 and time for another news round-up from LMLOS.
There’s a lot of immigration news today due to Kristjen Nielsen’s departure, and some of it is going to be tough to read. Our immigration policies in America keep slipping further and further to the right, and it’s terrifying to see.
I’ve included a poll today about topics to consider for the 2020 election. I am NOT including “Beating Trump” in the poll because that’s a given and it’s our duty to choose the best policies from the candidates we have. If we can’t put forth a candidate with a winning platform, then Trump will win again. So, which policies are on your radar?
If you like having your news gathered for you from various sources, please continue to recommend these Round-Ups and consider buying me a coffee on Ko-fi.com. It helps me continue to write, homeschool, and run the political news aggregate page.
As always, there will be a thread below for new or breaking news. And please, share any thoughts you have below.
NEWS STORIES
Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen Leaving Post -- -- Apparently she decided putting children in cages was a bad look for her.
Feds Arrest New York Man for Allegedly Threatening to Kill Rep. Ilhan Omar -- -- (The Daily Beast) The Alt-Right, Trump, and Fox News are dangerous to people who are promoting real change for the systemically oppressed. They are religious bigots and racists and we need to expose them.
House Republicans, at NRA's urging, vote against Violence Against Women Act -- -- (ABC) 50 women a month are shot to death by an intimate partner in the US. An American woman is 16 times more likely to be killed with a gun than women in other developed nation. 4.5 million living women in America have been threatened with a gun by an intimate partner. I wonder why the NRA doesn't support VAWA? Maybe because a key market demographic abuses women?
Bernie Sanders Is the Most Popular 2020 Candidate Among Hispanic Voters, New Polling Finds -- -- The Latinx vote is going to be important in 2020, and it should be considering the racism and genocide the current administration is perpetrating on people of color.
New bills would ban pelvic exams without consent -- -- (Politico) There are currently only FIVE states that prohibit non-consensual pelvic exams of women under anesthesia. The practice is explicitly outlawed in Hawaii, California, Illinois, Virginia, and Oregon. If you're a woman and live anywhere else AND had surgery under anesthesia at a teaching hospital, it is possible that you have had a pelvic exam unknowingly and without your explicit consent.
3 Black Churches Have Burned in 10 Days in a Single Louisiana Parish -- -- (NY Times) It "might be" suspicious?? We are facing a return to the Jim Crow days as the Republicans crack down on voting laws and the rise of white domestic terrorism against people of color. We, as a nation, must work to protect the most vulnerable members of our society. If we are judged by our current actions, we should be condemned.
In Iowa, Bernie Sanders says states should allow felons to vote from behind bars -- -- (Des Moines Register) Considering the mess our federal justice system is in, it is wrong that the rich can fund ways to escape punishment for crimes they actually commit and keep the right to vote, while the poor are condemned to sit in jail for years while waiting for a court date (a la Kevin Smith in Louisiana) and not have any say in how best to increase their chances at a fair trial. Let them vote.
US wants 2 years to ID migrant kids separated from families -- -- (PBS) The government that stole children from their families now says it will take two years to reunite them. They could track women's periods and pregnancies and force childbirth, but reuniting those families is just too hard.
Panicky whites don’t get to decide who’s American | Opinion -- -- (Miami Herald) Pat Buchanan and Laura Ingraham are not part of my "we". And the only way to "Make America Great Again" is to stop tolerating the elements that only view America through the lens of white supremacy. Their views lead to children in cages and a justice system rigged horribly against the poor and people of color.
Beto O'Rourke is correct: Trump's immigration rhetoric is straight out of the Third Reich -- -- (Salon) We are living in a fascist regime. Trump recognizes only the humanity of white, wealthy men. Everyone else simply exists at his whim. He treats American citizens as "takers" and mouths the same talking points that Hitler used against the Jewish people. He has threatened to kill asylum seekers at the border for the crime of coming to America, and we can see his rhetoric espoused in the things CBP and ICE say to the detainees. This is the new American Reich.
-- This is 322 pages of statements about the conditions detainees are living through. The stories of how they were separated from their children, the things CBP and ICE said to them. It is incredibly revealing, and through it we see that Trump's dehumanization of immigrants has worked. He has enlisted his own SS squad to torture these human beings. I call on any Trump supporter who sees themselves as Christian to read through this and justify their support. How can you reconcile the teachings of Christ with this?
Before Nielsen's abrupt resignation, hardline Trump adviser Stephen Miller was reportedly handed total control of border policy -- -- (Business Insider) Trump's own Goebbles is now in charge of the borders and immigration policy. Yes, the man who came up with the Muslim Ban and pushed for increased separation of families is now running that show. He plans on "cracking down" even more. This is a disgusting and horrific turn of events.
Bernie Sanders Says Fox News Is A Propaganda Arm Of Trump Administration -- -- (HuffPo) And I 100% agree with the Senator here and think his town hall idea is great. Fox News viewers will get a chance to hear the truth instead of whatever propaganda pap the Administration wants to feed them. Will they listen? Who knows. But if even 1% of the viewers learn something new or change their perspective, it could be worth it.
