In her recent interview on Late Night with Seth Meyers, former first daughter Chelsea Clinton didn’t hold back her thoughts on Donald Trump and his supporters. Growing up in the media spotlight, Clinton is no stranger to harassment or abuse from people on other sides of the political aisle. Still, she told Meyers that she feels the greatest shock in modern politics comes from Trump’s “new levels of cruelty.” Not just in terms of his language or insults, but in terms of the policies we don’t always talk about. Basically, the cruelties that don’t fit neatly into Twitter wars or headlines.
In this case? Endangered animals.
"I think that a lot of people don't know how much the Trump administration has done to roll back protections for endangered species," Clinton explained to Meyers.
She’s absolutely right. Trump’s administration has made repeated efforts to reduce protections for endangered species. From allowing oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to allowing hunters to bring elephant and lion trophies back into the US, Trump seems perfectly happy to roll us back in time.
Perhaps it has something to do with the fact Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump love to hunt?
Given that it’s basically impossible for Chelsea to appear in public without talking about one, or both, of her parents, Hillary did come up. Meyers posed a question about Fox News and the network’s endless focus on the Clinton family.
"If they're still obsessing about my mother's walking in the woods, and it allows Democrats to actually try to stop bad things from happening and make progress elsewhere, like, I can live with that," Clinton replied to Meyers. "But I do sometimes wonder, like, if my mother weren't here ... what would they talk about?"
A good question. Maybe … Endangered species? We can only hope.
