Leahy brings up Trump’s direct involvement in campaign finance violations and makes it clear that this does represent an underlying crime that could be a basis for Trump’s interference.
Barr: Yes.
Leahy: Thank you.
Leahy confronts Barr over the references to Congress playing a role in determining obstruction. Barr denies that the next step was for Mueller to turn this stuff over to Congress “that’s not why we conduct grand jury investigations.” Tell that to Ken Starr.
Barr goes back to claiming that Trump has the ability to end an investigation “if it’s not well founded” …. which is an absolute get out of jail free card. It’s also the focus of the 19-page letter. Barr slips in a “we now know he wasn’t being falsely accused.” He’s been trying to say this all day … because it’s clearly the line he’s supposed to say.
