Musings
Our BBQ at kimoconnor’s place yesterday was so sweet and enjoyable; her garden is amazing. Unfortunately no one took any photos because we were engaged in eating plus solving the world’s problems. By Daily Kos standards that means it didn’t happen. Although I’m getting more and more forgetful, I’m almost certain it did. Kim, dsb, citisven, side pocket, Mrs. side pocket, norm, Mark (I forgot his handle) and his wife Barb were in attendance. As we were leaving I found my Kos cap on top of the Prius. Kim’s neighbors said they saw my DLY Kos license plate and put 2 and 2 together when they found my cap on the sidewalk. I took the opportunity to proselytize Daily Kos, as usual.
Our conversation stimulated Citisven to write a diary he had been considering for a while, and he did:
Shifting culture towards nourishing a just and sustainable society, or The Art of the Green New Deal.
I was inspired enough to scope out our own tiny patio which, though it’s mostly concrete, has a few planting opportunities.
It was difficult getting used to the soil here, as it is black and basically clay. We amended and amended last year and yet were disappointed. I mean…..zucchini? We harvested a few small ones vs. the massive production at the farm. This year I have relocated the site and dug down as far as humanly possible and filled the hole with the best potting soil. We’ll have to see.
We were successful with pots, however, because location and soil can be controlled. I planted a sungold tomato near where I had one last year. These are cherry-sized and incredibly productive and sweet.
Mighty Oaks from tiny acorns grow, or so I’ve heard.
Last year out of the same pot we got a huge plant with overwhelming production.
Whenever I’m moved to write about the homeless situation I remember that I’ve done so before. I wrote a KTK last year about it. So today I was intrigued with a flyer from the Methodist Church about 1/2 mile away from us. It explained that they had been participating in a program sponsored by Catholic Charities called Safe Parking, and they were resolved to restart their efforts, Under this program they would allow three cars to park in their parking lot, use bathrooms, and have access to water. It turns out that the program is in operation, which until today I was unaware of. This seems like a good program and not very expensive. Are there any programs like this in your area? Would programs like this be accepted in your neighborhood, as easily as they are in our progressive area?
As always this is an open thread.
