Sen. Lindsey Graham has used lilting southern accent to hide his craven hypocrisies over the years. With Donald Trump’s rise to the top of the Republican Party, Sen. Graham, like all good Lords of the Flies, has been working overtime to ingratiate himself to the orange carnival barker blowing into the conch shell. None of the these old-timey republicans want to become their party’s Piggy. But how do you show fealty to someone so transparently corrupt? You go all-in on conspiracy theories and obstruction of justice, that’s what you do. To that end, Graham was on Fox News with Maria Bartiromo to carry water for a White House that seems hellbent on forcing impeachment proceedings.
The thrust of Graham’s appearance was to continue to stoke doubt that the Mueller investigation and report show wrongdoing on the part of the entire Trump machine, and instead is a long-standing witch hunt set in motion by President Obama’s deep state forces. To do this, Graham continues to reference “classified material” that he says he wants to get released to the public, that shows all the dirty workings by the FBI against Trump. Here’s a taste:
Campaign Action
Sen. Graham: Well, I think you will learn that the FBI was on notice, that Christopher Steele was not a reliable informant when it came to Trump. That he was being paid for by the Democratic Party, that his work product had not been vetted, and that he was out to get Trump, and they used the dossier anyway.
Okey, dokey. From there, Graham explains that he believes that Trump adviser George Papadopoulos only said he was trying to collude with Russia on behalf of the Trump campaign because the FBI put those words and ideas in his head. That’s the angle of conspiracy Sen. Graham is promoting. But here’s the moment when Sen. Lindsey Graham shows Donald Trump that he’s a good boy, who deserves a treat and a pat on the head. Asked about Donald Trump Jr.’s pending Senate Intelligence Committee subpoena, issued by Republican Sen. Burr, Sen. Graham stepped all the way into the deep end of the swamp. Those witnesses who turned state’s evidence? “Worthless,” according to Sen. Graham.
Sen. Graham: Michael Cohen is a worthless witness. And if I were Donald Trump Jr.’s ... lawyer, I would tell him, you don’t need to go back into this environment anymore, you’ve been there for hours and hours and hours, and nothing being alleged here changes the outcome of the Mueller investigation. I would call it a day.
That’s quite a bit of obstructing justice for one Southern “gentleman.”
Donald Trump is up for re-election in 2020, but maybe more importantly, the Senate Republican majority is also in the balance. We need to get out the votes to take back the Senate and clean the corruption from our nation’s capital.
