Good Morning! It’s May 15, 2019, and here are your news stories today from Liberal Minded Ladies of Substance. Please remember to recommend and share!
Today we have poll results! Apparently, my poll was accidentally promoted on Reddit, which is great, don’t get me wrong. However, I hope all those people voted on the official poll as well. Mine doesn’t get talked about on MSNBC. (Though, if they DO want to talk about it, I’m available. Call me!) Bernie still won rather handily, but there were some other interesting pick-ups. Williamson had 2 votes, the Yang Gang disappeared from that one poll where they dominated, and my second choice Gravel even picked up a vote. I’d be interested in hearing where people find out about my poll.
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
At this point, I am still able to include every candidate without getting yelled at by the system. If we hit a point where I can’t have every candidate, I will probably have to start relegating candidates.
And, I hope you enjoy today’s cover photo. I didn’t take it; I found it on Pinterest, but I wanted a particularly nice photo to offset the news for the day. It’s going to be interesting. We’re leading off with a prelude to war and ending with me having to write another diary on something that shocked me.
If you like having your news gathered for you from various sources, please continue to recommend these Round-Ups and consider buying me a coffee on Ko-fi.com. It helps me continue to write, homeschool, and run the political news aggregate page.
As always, there will be a thread below for new or breaking news. And please, share any thoughts you have below.
NEWS STORIES
This student decorated her graduation cap with QR code that sends people to a list of high school shooting victims -- (CNN) This student is brave. Some schools have prohibited students from decorating their caps to avoid controversy. Of course, people that don't like this also probably think it's a good idea to force teachers to carry guns.
Arthur Character Mr. Ratburn Comes Out as Gay and Gets Married in Beloved Children's Cartoon -- (People) Cue the people that hate this kind of thing complaining about a kids' show pushing an agenda. Here's the thing, kids need to see this is normal, OK, and accepted. The people that worry about how this will affect the kids don't have a problem with a mom and dad aardvark kissing on TV, but they have a problem with Mr. Ratburn getting married? Some kids have two parents of the same gender. Plenty of people struggle with their sexuality. If we were more accepting, it would be less of a struggle and more of a joy.
#StillSanders After All This Time? You’re Right To Continue The Fight -- (Medium) The author addresses several of the common complaints and misconceptions about Bernie Sanders. I was with Bernie in 2016, and I am #StillSanders because, more than ever, I believe he is the candidate with the consistent history of being with the people. We need Bernie, like we needed FDR, to lead us out of this dark period and get us back on track.
I own the Red Hen restaurant that asked Sarah Sanders to leave. Resistance isn’t futile. -- (MSN) I know it's hard to struggle in the face of hatred and oppression. And it blows my mind that people see children placed in cages and think this is about Hillary. But the good news is, as I keep saying, we are stronger together. It's hard to be the person to take the stand and take the heat. It's easier when you know you have people at your back.
Ignoring Trump’s Orders, Hoping He’ll Forget -- (The Atlantic) They don't fight him on it, they just don't do anything. This sets a dangerous precedent and is a glaring red flag that our government is NOT WORKING. Aides know that Trump has the attention span of a toddler, and even though he tries to rule by Tweet, they are just choosing to ignore him. He's a puppet, but still does immeasurable damage to the country. It's all the power and base urges and no checks or balances.
This is what foreign policy looks like when you have no strategy -- (LA Times) Trump isn't even meeting his own goals. His dealmaking "skills" have failed with NK. Americans all along the economic spectrum are hurt by this trade war thanks to the volatile market and the tariffs. His "plan" is hurting us because he doesn't listen and he doesn't have a plan. His toddler-style approach to governing is all lizard-brain and no thought.
How to Watch House Members Read Full Redacted Mueller Report Starting Noon on Thursday -- (Newsweek) Democrats are going to take turns reading out the redacted Mueller Report live. So far, 20 people have signed on and that number may grow. Since it's not an official reading, it won't be up on the Congressional channels. It's good political theater, but will they actually be able to do anything?
The Supreme Court Just Outlined How It Might Get Rid of Abortion Rights -- (GQ) If you wonder why States are implementing such harsh abortion laws now, it's because they know this Supreme Court, with its extremist weight, is preparing to ignore "established precedent" and weigh in in favor of "state rights". Conservatives like to pick and choose which rights they think belong to the individual (unlimited guns) and which rights belong to the state (women having agency over their own bodies.)
Mueller Report Elicited A Lot Of Conversation — But Little Election Legislation -- (NPR) The Mueller Report was released, but instead of acting on what it revealed, Congress is doing...nothing. They talk, argue, put on a show, but aren't doing anything to secure the future sanctity of our elections or preserve the our government. Florida was hacked in 2016. Would it come as a surprise that perhaps some elections in 2018 were also hacked? (Looking at you Scott, DeSantis, and Kemp). The numbers changed don't have to be big to make a shift one way or another. According to Florida's own Election site, Broward County has 1,198,686 registered voters. A 5% change in vote numbers is nearly 60K votes. Ballotpedia says voter turnout in Florida was 65% in 2016. You could slip in a missing 5% to that total and no one would be surprised. This is a real problem. (Diary Incoming with more information)
GOP Extremism Was Powerful Before Trump, and It Will Outlive Him -- (NY Mag) The GOP didn't suddenly shift to the right with Trump. They were already there. And they'll be there once we're rid of him.
My 19 year old sons only knew one year of peace. My 13 year old son has never known a time where we weren’t at war.
