It’s Monday, May 20, 2019, and it feels like a Monday. That doesn’t stop the news, so here’s the round-up from Liberal Minded Ladies of Substance.
It’s all news, all the time around here. There are some extra news stories today for the same reason that the news is late being posted today. I went out for a couple hours to get some stuff for the garden (even though it’s 50 degrees, cloudy, and wet around here.) I figured I’d make it up with some extra news stories, only the more digging I did for news, the more news I found, so enjoy being inundated with ALL THE NEWS.
Needless to say, this didn’t really improve my Monday mood either. We need the sun and warm weather back.
If you like having your news gathered for you from various sources, please continue to recommend these Round-Ups and consider buying me a coffee on Ko-fi.com. It helps me continue to write, homeschool, and run the political news aggregate page.
As always, there will be a thread below for new or breaking news. And please, share any thoughts you have below.
NEWS STORIES
Trump’s pick for ICE director: I can tell which migrant children will become gang members by looking into their eyes -- -- (Politico) MArk Morgan told Tucker Carlson that he can look into the eyes of a child and KNOW they are going to be a gang member. "It's Unequivocal," he said. Remember when racism was a career ending thing? That was before the GOP decided to embrace it.
As Suicides Rise, Insurers Find Ways to Deny Mental Health Coverage -- -- (Bloomberg) We have seen this with regular health coverage as well as mental health coverage. With mental health coverage, however, there is an invisible and deadly aspect. I know hour health insurance covers three visits to a mental health care professional, and if it's not a PCP, it would be charged as a specialist and applied to our high deductible, even in-network. Until mental health is accepted as part of whole health care, profits will always come before people.
** READ THE ANALYSIS FIRST** Bernie Sanders Wants to Destroy the Best Schools Poor Urban Kids Have -- -- (NY Mag) If you want to know where the division in the Democratic Party comes from, this article is a prime example. The author, in 2016, campaigned for Hillary, so his distaste for Sanders is understandable, His support of Charter Schools, claiming they are the best schools "poor urban kids" (White Person code for "Black") is a bit more confusing... Until you realize his wife is an exec for Charter Schools. Charter Schools by and large provide poorer outcomes for children. They have the same problems as public schools, lower test scores, and cost more, and maybe that's because the problem isn't with the educational system, it's with the determination to privitize all aspects of education, from testing on up. But sure, let's blame Bernie for wanting to provide a future for kids and continue to promote the myth that Bernie doesn't care about black people. As long as Chait's money from those charter schools comes rolling in, journalistic integrity means nothing. Right?
Bernie Sanders will call for ban on for-profit charter schools -- -- (CNN) I can't believe I have to say this, but here's a better understanding of what Bernie is proposing. This author also points out something that Chait (in his conflicted state) declined to mention. The NAACP was the first to propose an end on public funding of Charter Schools.
Billionaire graduation speaker tells class of 2019 he's paying off their student loans -- -- (Local News) This Billionaire gave the 2019 Class of Morehouse College one of the best starts they could have. A chance to get their feet underneath them without being burdened by having to take the first paying job they come across and an opportunity to start their paths without worrying about the incessant heaviness of those loans. We need to accept that our education system, both in basic schooling and post-secondary, has been co-opted and corrupted by private interests. And we need to take it back.
How Canada’s growing anti-abortion movement plans to swing the next federal election -- -- (Macleans) Before you contemplate that run for the (Northern) border, keep in mind, America is exposting its problems now too. The Far Right is making strides in Canada.
They tried to use rape to silence women protesters. It didn't work -- -- (CNN) When the women protestors on the streets of the Sudan otnumbered the men, Bashir's military was told to stop it. "Break the girls to break the men." No matter where you go in the world, it seems to be the policy that men will use whatever horrible tactics they want to silence women from speaking up. Women are not allowing it any more. The protests didn't stop and BAshir's government was upended.
Sanders: It's 'not good enough' just to defeat Trump in 2020 -- -- (NBC News) And this is what I've been saying. We need to focus on beating Trump after we've chosen the best candidate with the best policies for America's future. We have to tackle issues of climate change, the ongoing suppression of women and minorities, foreign policy, and more. Choosing a candidate who will only maintain our status quo is actually a really bad idea at this point. We need a candidate who isn't afraid to look at our future and take the steps we need to ensure there IS a future.
Ava DuVernay’s Fight to Tell the True Story of the Central Park Five -- -- (Vanity Fair) It is important to remember that these boys were innocent, exonerated in 2002 after being convicted and serving time for a crime they did not commit. One of them was tried as an adult and spent 14 years in prison, much of it in solitary confinement for his own protection. It is also important to remember that Donald Trump, eager to be on the forefront of an issue, get more ad space, and continue to stay in the limelight, took out FULL PAGE ADS calling for their death. This is his real legacy, one of racism, corruption, and violence. He should pay each of those boys $176,000. The equivalent of the amount of money he paid for each ad.
Republicans Privately Say Mueller Report Revealed 'Disappointing' Conduct, Think Barr Mischaracterized Findings -- -- (Newsweek) Republicans are starting to stir themselves to actually speak out about the "problematic" behavior of their leader and the Attorney General. Whether that will lead to some sort of action is questionable at this point.
Amash gets primary challenger after Trump impeachment tweets -- -- (Detroit News) I am not a fan of Amash, but this also highlights the "party over people" aspect of the current GOP. Amash seems to be the only one really aware of what's going on.
Teen dies in Border Patrol custody, marking 5th death of migrant child since December -- -- (The Hill) The 5th child to die in custody since December. And I really need to highlight that it's only the 5th we know about. Remember, they want to prevent abortions from happening "to save children", but if women miscarry or have stillbirths due to the treatment in detention camps, those don't count as children or deaths.
Deutsche Bank staff flagged suspicious Trump and Kushner transactions, report claims -- -- (Independent) In 2016 and 2017, Deutsche Bank officials marked financial crimes by Trump and Jared Kushner and recommended reports be filed with the US Treasury, but bank executives declined to do so because of their special relationship with Kushner Companies. Nothing suspicious or untoward to see here, obviously. Trump already tweeted out: "WRONG!" That should make us all feel better.
EPA to ‘Massage Death Projections’ to Make Trump’s Coal Plan Look Less Deadly: Report -- -- (Daily Beast) We're facing the end of the world by fire. Trump wants to make money as the globe burns, and he doesn't care who dies as long as that happens. Black lung? Cancer? Poison water? Not his problem. Rising oceans? Wild storms? Weird, deadly weather? He doesn't care because he'll be dead by that point.
Trump reacts angrily to New York Times report on Deutsche Bank transactions -- -- (Guardian) Trump says he doesn't want or need banks. He's made a lot of money and buys everything in cash. I wonder about the banks that hold mortgages on all his properties feel. I mean, if he doesn't need them and is flush with cash, they can just call in those chits, right?
