Just this week the Republican Speaker of Virginia’s House of Delegates Kirk Cox was spotted canvassing alone in one of his newly un-racially gerrymandered precincts. A female voter was doing yard work when she spotted the Speaker strolling along her neighborhood street early in the afternoon. While working in her yard this voter said she had spent the afternoon listening to podcasts about judicial rights of Americans, and how the GOP seeks to remove the rights of various under-represented minorities. She was already upset when she looked up to see none other than Speaker Kirk Cox strolling her way. When she spotted Speaker Cox walking in her direction she pulled up shop and ran inside her home. She slammed the door cold when she got safely inside.
Virginia’s 2019 General Assembly Speaker Kirk Cox (R-Chesterfield, Colonial Heights) slammed the door cold on women across this great nation. Virginia had the opportunity to be the 38th state to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. The ERA would allow courts to issue rulings in favor of equal pay, equal housing, and equality for women under the law. (For those unfamiliar with the ERA see Dukes vs Wal-Mart en.wikipedia.org/...)
Unfortunately, Speaker Cox slammed the door on women in the United State when he blocked the ERA from being allowed a floor vote in the General Assembly. He knew the amendment could likely pass, and he couldn’t stand the idea of women being paid the same as a man. Now Kirk Cox is about to learn that karma is female.
Since Kirk Cox has been in office, his district has been racially gerrymandered to make his elections more favorable to white males like himself. (Hence his lack of support for the ERA, just sayin!) The courts have ruled going forward Virginia can no longer racially gerrymander voting districts. Therefore Kirk Cox’s district has been redrawn and it no longer favors a Republican like himself. In fact, precincts in the new 66th have historically voted for Democrats on average by 8 points. No wonder Kirk Cox has appealed to keep is racially gerrymandered district all the way up to the Supreme Court of the United States. He wants to choose his voters instead of the voters having the opportunity to choose him. As we all await SCOTUS’s decision, candidates must move forward with the new districts as drawn. Which means, Kirk Cox is about to get a lot of doors slammed right back in his anti-female face. If Speaker Kirk Cox is going to slam the door of the General Assembly in the faces of women everywhere, he should certainly expect the same treatment in his new Southside precincts.
The good news for this Chesterfield voter is she has an excellent candidate to vote for this November. Sheila Bynum-Coleman is running to unseat Speaker Cox. Sheila Bynum-Coleman supports increasing school funding, providing safe classrooms, enacting criminal justice reform, and increasing the minimum wage. In 2020 Sheila Bynum-Coleman will vote to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment! Karma is female and it’s a lesson we will send to all in November.
