If you want to put up a reader board on the side of US 101 in Quilcene, WA that reads ‘USA FREEDOM VOTE TRUMP’ in front of your own home, that is your right. If you want to hang a noose from your window, I guess that is your right as well.
But you will be called out for it. Because we know what your noose represents. We are a progressive community in a progressive state and we will not let your hate go unanswered.
Sometimes we protest en masse, watching each others’ backs; sometimes we protest solo — and we find that our allies back us up (thank you for the cold electrolyte beverage in the hot Memorial Day sun). By carrying out a simple (almost*) silent protest we communicate to our community that we are aware, engaged, active, and strong.
If we can’t stand up to hate here we can’t stand up to hate anywhere. Which means we must stand up to hate here. Even if just for 3 hours, solo, on a small town corner in Quilcene, WA.
No great protest pics here, just one of the sign. Not posting the photo of the noose or the wannabe lynchmans’ home.
*When the best they have is accusing you of being from Port Townsend and engaging in sex acts with other consenting adults you can’t help but laugh and taunt them with ‘is that all you got?’
