We have a real tough time finding candidates in rural red districts. Traditionally, these candidates step up on their own, without much support from the state party, much less from outside organizations.
Although it shouldn’t; running for office takes real money. The startup costs alone discourage potential candidates from throwing their hat in the ring. .
Support typically comes only AFTER a candidate starts filling their coffers, and proving themselves “viable.” Donors only supporting the races that are sure wins.
This year is different.
This year, organizations like 90for90 and WinVirginia are stepping up for the little guy. They are making it possible for candidates in red areas, not only to run, but to win — and not go broke doing it. Removing this burden opens up new possibilities, and avenues for finding and fostering new candidates and leaders. Image the unleashed talent!
I’ve been organizing in Virginia’s House District 64 for 10 years, a district that is far from blue. And although, we’ve built an army of activists and volunteers — the expense was still cost prohibitive, and the funding non-existent.
Until now.
Programs like WinVirginia’s “Candidate Starter Fund” and 90for90 take start up expenses out of the equation. Making it easier for people like me to be able to serve and represent their community.
Follow their lead, help the little guy.
