Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live Thursday night, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told the comedian that she thinks Trump wants to be impeached because he knows that the Republican Senate is "completely in the pocket of the Donald Trump," as she put it.
"I think the president wants us to impeach him," Pelosi said. "He knows it's not a good idea to be impeached, but the silver lining for him is then, he believes, that he would be exonerated by the United States Senate."
Pelosi also said Democrats are headed down “the path” of impeachment. "We've been on that path for a while and when we do get to where we're going, we're going to be ready." Kimmel chided that it feels like "we've been on the path for a really, really long while—like since the '70s." Pelosi countered that Democrats have only held the majority since the beginning of the year, and the first month of that time was consumed by the government shutdown.
"When we go down this path, we have to be ready, and it has to be clear to the American people," Pelosi said, adding that Democrats were still gathering information. "The public deserves to know the truth, the facts."
Perhaps the most interesting part of the interview came when Pelosi suggested that she knew better than almost anyone what Trump's infractions were.
"Let me just say this immodestly—I probably have a better idea as to what the president has to be held accountable for than anyone," Pelosi remarked. "The only person who knows better than I do is the president of the United States. He knows what his violations have been."
Man, that sure sounds like Pelosi has something specific in mind. Pure speculation, but it made me wonder if Pelosi and Democrats are driving at uncovering some semi-specific piece of information for public consumption.
